I can agree with this post - I have just bought a second hand A3 and at the end of the first day it stopped completely. Green Flag came out to pick it up and checked a few things first - the Engine Management Fuse No 29 is blowing everytime you put a fuse in it. There was also a puff of smoke from under the bonnet when putting in a lower rated fuse (to be on the safe side)

Any clues as to what this might be - couldn't see anything shorting out under the bonnet with the plastic engine cowling off

Fuse number 29 serves the ignition amplifier/coil.

Interesting - the diagram in the manual is for the left hand drive model - so is the wrong way round for the right hand drive model! :)

If that fuse is blowing all the time - I guess we are looking at a new coil?

I have checked the layout diagram on the inside of the fuse box and the listing on the fuse box panel and Fuse 29 is Engine Management/Timing

There was also a puff of smoke from the lower right hand side of the engine when a lower amp fuse was tried, and the fuse blew immediately.

Don't rule out a wiring fault.

Yeah, the other thought I had was something shorting out somewhere.

Try renewing the fuse with the coil unplugged.

As it turns out it was the Coil Pack that had gone, new one fitted an OK, but now showing intermittant misfiring problem - see this thread http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=64005
