Lacquer finish on a Passat

Hi
I am looking to buy a V reg Passat this week (deep red colour), the car has a 20 pence size chip on the bonnet which has taken off the lacquer finish. Is this costly to repair and normal for a stone chip? Do these lacquer finishes have any advantages or disadavantages. My current Audi doesn't seem to have one and I've never missed it....?

With some practice this type of repair is quite easy to do... re-lacquer and rub down with 2000 then 3000 grit paper. Once this is done then just polish out the scratches with a Random Orbit polisher. Remember to use a sanding block or something flat to prevent you from cutting through.
