View Full Version : Question Which tiptronic gearbox oil

I'm getting myself confused over oils
Audi confirm that my gearbox needs G 060 162 A2 oil.
I just want I've found a couple that seem to match the spec, can someone confirm if either of these will be ok?
6 Liter ATF 8HP Automatik-Getriebeöl für VW G 060 162 A1 / A2 / A6, Audi | eBay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/6-Liter-ATF-8HP-Automatik-Getriebeol-fur-VW-G-060-162-A1-A2-A6-Audi-/181329388878?hash=item2a3812e54e)
1 (1x1) Liter MANNOL AG 60 Automatik Getriebeöl/ ATF Öl/ für ZF 8HP/ 9HP/ VW | eBay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1-1x1-Liter-MANNOL-AG-60-Automatik-Getriebeol-ATF-Ol-fur-ZF-8HP-9HP-VW-/321621453488?hash=item4ae221eab0)
I don't fancy paying Audi £31 per litre.

I would use the ZF Lifeguard fluid 6 Original ZF LifeGuardFluid 6 Automatikgetriebe 6 Liter - GETRIEBEÖL 6HP | eBay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Original-ZF-LifeGuardFluid-6-Automatikgetriebe-6-Liter-GETRIEBEOL-6HP-/121136880216?hash=item1c34521a58) This will be the same fluid that Audi use but without their mark-up!

Thanks for the link but thats G 0550005 A1 / A2 / A6
I've had a look at what the seller has and they don't seem to have anything for G 060 162 A2 does that matter?
MarkTM

I used this:
ZF Lifeguard 6, Shell M 1375.4,Transmission Fluid, ATF, (http://www.bristoltransmissions.co.uk/shop/product.php?id_product=88)
They also do the original LG6 at £15.60pl
Appreciate that the tiptronic system holds 10l inc the torque convertor, In my case they drained out 7.25l and refilled 8, so there was still 2l of old fluid making your fluid change 80% new.
ZF recommend a change at 80k and 50k thereafter.
Regardless of which fluid used please ensure you do the ZF bolt tightening sequence once the tranny pan is off.

IIRC that's Lifeguard 8.
Have you checked what software your tranny has?

I saw that thread earlier and thats why I got confused.
No I don't know my software version, do you happen to remember what the version would be if I had had the update?
Hopefully I can find someone with VCDS, who won't charge the earth, to check for me.

Ahhh, sorry will look at that post again to see if can make it better .

Would need the 3 letter transmission code to cross ref list, you can check on data sticker in spare wheel well / service log, mines HKG.

Serial be handy also, you can see a plate on the base of tranny with it on, VCDS log of module 02 would also have it.

It makes sense, I just couldn't make out what the new version of the software would be.
I've had a look and I believe my transmission code is JML (Or HNN JML)
I'm at work so won't be able to get under the car to get the serial (I assume you can only see the plate from underneath?)

Hi Mark,
Is this the ZF bolt tightening sequence?

From what I understand from that site though, is that this is for re-assebling the oil pan.
Assemble the oil pan complete with new seal. Plastic oil pans are fully replaced. In this case, the oil filter and seal are integrated in the new pan. When assembling the oil pan, ensure that the new screws are tightened in the correct sequence and that the stipulated tightening torque is applied..

Aren't they tightened correctly from factory?....or do they go out of spec?
MarkTM

They are bound to go out of spec as from memory 2 bolts are at a mere 2nm and the rest at 10nm which is nothing at all.
Won't spoil your fun of searching using the ref on the diagram...google can be your friend!

Based on the fact that Marks car is the same age as mine, and its highly unlikely that someone decided to update the gearbox software, I'm going for the G 055 005 Stuff.
MarkTM
23-09-2015, 08:35 AM
I would ensure you order 8l to be safe, also I've had no problems whatsoever with the pentosin fluid that Bristol Transmissions used (link in post 4) which meets the spec & works out at £72.
DIY or are you getting someone to do it for you?
Chriseybaby
23-09-2015, 08:39 AM
Yes I was going to get 8L. I've just put 8 in my basket at Bristol Transmissions and its added £100 for delivery! Might need to give them a call.
I'm not brave enough to DIY it but I have been quoted £94 labour to do it by a local Audi specialist.

I saw at the ZF video from the link I posted above that the use a pressured kind of pump to fill the oil. In both changes in Audi they used just a tank which they hanged it above the car and was filling it with gravity.
In both changes they filled around 5,5-6 litres each time.
Do you think it's better to find someone with a pump?

Gainton - Everything i've read states not to use a pump to flush/suck out the fluid, weird that my place got out 7.25l though?
Chrisey - Yes noticed that am sure a mistake in their system, so worth a call when they're open as from memory they charge £10 for delivery

Mark I mean to fill in the oil. ZF video use a pump while my local AD used just a reservoir hanged above the car and was filled just with gravity.
For flush/suck out the oil they just left it till it was drained.

All three Audi dealers around my place don't have this pump. Only a specialized mechanic for auto trannys have it. Do you think it's better to fill in the oil with this pump?

You could use a piece of garden hose and top up from above the engine.
The oils is runnier than you think and will travel down the hose no problem.
This how I do my manual cars, as soon as the 2 to 4 litres you put in the initial fill up is done, stick your thumb over the hose !

I got some for my 3rd change due next week. It says VW TL 521 62 on the sticker. If Bristol Transmissions use it as an aftermarket oil for the ZF6HP, I trust them.

I don't think its the right oil, VW TL 521 62 = G052162 A? as well.
When I view the spec data sheet for Link:- PENTOSIN ATF (http://www.pentosin.net/specsheets/Pentosin_ATF1.pdf)1 (http://www.pentosin.net/specsheets/Pentosin_ATF1.pdf) it states also ZF spec it meets TE-ML 11B.
Here is link to ZF TE-ML 11 (http://www.zf.com/media/media/en/document/lubricantslists/TE-ML_11.pdf) sheet updated 01/01/15 if you search 052162 within PDF you get hits for 4 / 5 speed auto tranny , search 11B hits again not the 6 speed tranny.
Like Mark is stating it seems a ZF LG 5 equivalent, this also reflected in the ZF TE-ML 11 PDF.
This later dated post by someone on A8 Forum (http://www.audiworld.com/forums/a8-s8-d3-platform-discussion-60/audi-a8-d3-transmission-fluid-atf-truth-2882676/) also has info the same as what I found from cross ref'ing PDFs / VAG stuff for the post I did in 2013 linked in post 5 of this thread.

25k miles later and no issues, and promised I'd be getting them to do another fluid change at 30k miles...so will be asking them then why ATF1 was used.
Hopefully by gearbox won't explode before then! :1zhelp:

Had the 3rd oil/filter change today at 139k miles with the Pentosin ATF 1 oil from above. Old oil was at top contition after 30k miles and no filings were attached on the magnets. Previous oil was the RAVENOL ATF 6HP (http://www.ravenol.de/en/produkte/verwendung/d/Product/show/p/ravenol-atf-6hp-fluid.html).
Car drives smoother than before after these first miles driven, specially on "S" and while changing from 4th to 3rd and 3rd to 2nd gear. Hope it stays that way for the next 30k miles.

Hi Gents,
Just been researching this topic, as I've got an oil change coming up on my 2002 Allroad with Tiptronic.
A guy I went to college with years ago is now a ZF reliability engineer for ZF Australia. I've been looking at this: http://www.smithandallan.com/documents/PRODUCT%20INFO%20ATF%20Premium%20MV.pdf that seems to be equivalent to LT71141, he thinks it'll be fine.
So this is where my money has gone :)

I don't know if the DSG fluid is better than the Tiptronic 4/5 one (Pentosin ATF 1). Both are not correct for the ZF6HP19 transmission but the closest one from the Pentosin brand I think is the ATF 1.
BTW my transmission is way smoother after almost a week after the change with the Pentosin ATF 1.

This is the same fluid (http://www.ravenol.de/en/produkte/verwendung/d/Product/show/p/ravenol-atf-6hp-fluid.html) I used in my two previous changes which is the correct one as per VW/Audi (G 055005 A1/A2/A6).
Transmission feels a lot smoother though with the Pentosin ATF 1 fluid (hope this is for good LOL).

Dropped the car off last night to finally get the oil changed. Looking forward to collecting it this evening.
In the meantime I have a 55 plate tdi golf with 148k on the clock and it goes like a rocket. The garage also do revo remaps so I'm guessing the golf isn't standard

A little update after 600+ miles done after last oil/filter change.
Tranny feels a lot smoother and most importantly is that accelerates harder than before which is a big plus to me. I noticed that it stays on higher gears longer till it changes on a lower gear and also the bouncing revs while going downhill has almost gone.
I think I will stick to Pentosin ATF-1 fluid for the next change.
