Hi All

I am looking to service my recently acquired Golf Plus SE 1.9Tdi PD (2007).
According to the VW records it has been on the long life plan but with 118000 on the clock I am looking to move to 12 month plan.

I am confused about which oil to choose. I have been told that it depends on whether the car has a Diesel particulate installed (whatever that is).
Can somebody tell me how I find out if I have one and which oil spec to go for. The Engine is a 1.9 TDI (PD).

Any other info regarding service would also be appreciated.

Thanx

Paj

It is unlikely to have a DPF, it is a year too early. To be safe use Castrol EDGE 5W-30 FST fully synthetic engine oil (http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-713-castrol-edge-5w-30-fst-fully-synthetic-engine-oil.aspx) or Quantum Longlife 3 from any VAG dealer or TPS, this way you cannot go wrong (http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-713-castrol-edge-5w-30-fst-fully-synthetic-engine-oil.aspx). Set your intervals for 1 year and 9300 miles to make the engine last longer.

Hi Crasher

Can I have your thoughts on the following oil options please

Mobile 1 ESP 5w30 - Its states 507 compliant but then some exclusion for PD engines on Time and Distance service. Not sure what that means.
Quantum Longlife III - There appear to be 2 different types with the same name but one is about £10 more (for 5 litres). Which One to go for?
Gulf Formula GVX 5W - Seems to tick all the boxes
Castol Edge 5w30 - Most expensive of the lot.

Which one of these should I go for if i intend to change oil every year (10,000 miles). I am favoring Mobil1 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=mobil1) as its available locally from Euro Car Parts (http://rd.shopzilla.co.uk/rd2?t=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.thomann.de%2Fpartner_redire ct.html%3Fpartner_id%3D25293%26page%3Dthoiw2_artik el-345995.html&mid=115085&catId=12955&atom=11409&prodId=&oid=5940108579&pos=1&bId=18&bidType=2&bAmt=431b768070e1c697&cobrand=2&ppr=b28b02d73f9a8f0d&af_sid=56&rf=af1&af_assettype_id=10&af_creative_id=2912) for under £30 but I am concerned about the exclusion warning stated on the back.

Please advise

Mobil -1 esp 5W-30 is perfectly OK . Under £30 is a very good price ( is this for 4L or 5L ?).

Quantum oil is used in VAG workshops according to Crasher :notworthy it's fine for fixed service intervals so that would probably be the cheaper one.

Quantum is the cheapest approved 504.00 507.00 , VW actually own the brand .

There are cheaper non approved 504.00 507.00 oils " meets or exceeds the requirements of...."

Something REALLY stupid I found about Quantum Platinum recently (which is Castrol Edge) is that it is suitable for all VAG PD cars and cars with a Diesel Particulate Filter EXCEPT VAG vehicles! Now how daft is that? Because of this we have to use LongLife 3 in cars with a DPF even when on annual servicing, just like the A4 cabrio we are doing a turbo and service on today.

Lol , I remember seeing that contradiction.

Hi Doctle

The cheapest i could find was £27.25 delivered off Ebay. Which is about £2.50 cheaper that Mobile 1 which I guess is a better oil.
I once used Mobil 1 in my 1993 Pajero when i first bought in back in 2002. It de-sealed the engine and I started losing oil fast. It took a couple of years of semi synthetic oil to re-seal it.
It definitely breaks down sludge etc.

Hi All

Thanx for the information.

Based on your advice I have this morning purchased 5 litres of Mobil 1 ESP and a full set of Bosch filters (oil, fuel and air) from Euro Car Parts for under £45.
They seem to be having a sale today as that lot was near to £60 yesterday. Need to buy online using promo code EXTRA15 to get an extra 15% off the sale prices.
I reserved online and collected and paid in store.
