hello
i am new to this forum so i need a bit of help
i have just repaired my sons Audi A3 2.0 tdi bkd 16v 2005 model but i am not sure if i have got the tdc set on the correct stroke
i have had to replace the rear main oil seal so all gearbox has been off. I have took the pully wheel off and set the tdc with the mark that is on the cog but i am not sure i have done this on the correct stroke . i cant see any marks anywhere else apart from the fly wheel but i have nothing to line this up with . can someone please throw some advice my way diagrams will help too.

Did you take the timing belt off? If not the flywheel only fits one way if you took the belt off you need something like these tools to set up the timing VW Sharan 1.9 2.0 TDI PD VAG Diesel Engine Crank Crankshaft Timing Lock Tool Set | eBay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Sharan-1-9-2-0-TDI-PD-VAG-Diesel-Engine-Crank-Crankshaft-Timing-Lock-Tool-Set-/221745534276?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item33a1105544)

No timing belts not been off. Both my e manual and Haynes book show markings to set tdc. But this car doesn't have any markings

Are you talking about the flywheel?

You set TDC at the front of the engine using a locking tool on the crank sprocket. You set the cams with locking pins and then loosen the bolts slightly. There's no timing marks as such just holes for locking tools and slots it's quite hard to get it wrong. There's no timing mark on the flywheel because the timing is set at the front of the engine

Sorry about the confusion the only mark i can see is on the fly wheel it is O with a line through it. i cant find any timing marks on the timing cogs at all and there is no marks to line anything up with. I am just wondering which is the cam lobe that needs to be at the top on the induction stroke on cylinder#1 is it the first lobe or the second. and how do i know which is the induction stroke without seeing the valves. There is a mark on the small crankshaft cog which i have set to where it needs to be i just need to know how i find out which stroke # cylinder is on.
thanks

You can't do that, the seal has to be fitted with a jig and the front crank pulley locked with the setting tool.
