Towing & lights

I have a 2009 Tig Rline, bought it second hand and it already had one of the fold away tow bars fitted along with the 13 pin socket.

Whenever I tow my trailer (old 8 pin with converter) the trailer lights are permanently on (just the standard lights, not indicators, brakes etc) even when the car lights are switched to off. Any idea why this would be?

Secondly, I would expect to have a towing warning on the dash when I switch on the indicator but I have nothing, is this normal?

The trailer lights might be coming on all the time if the car has DRLs?

If it's a proper VW towbar installation, a bulb failure on the trailer should illuminate the bulb failure warning light on the dash, just like if any other bulb on the car failed.
