Hi again

Another issue thats bugging me

When sat on motorways (at the speedlimit of course .......) and when i'm in europe at 80-100mph the ride isnt the smoothest

It does have a judder (more so on smooth roads) but i doesnt affect the handling more a background judder.
I have replaced the tyres all round and had the wheels balanced although the tyre guy said the back ones took some doing and all could do with a refurb.

What could be making the car judder at speed but not so apparent at slower speeds? any ideas?

Cheers

Gareth

If the judder increases at certain speeds then drops away until the next speed/judder band then it's still probably the wheels/tyres. If it's about the same from 30mph upwards then there's a bunch of things, like tracking etc. Any uneven wear on the tyres ?

its not noticeable below 60 really but the faster you get the more noticeable it is, had new tyres on only 2000 miles ago so haven't noticed any uneven wear, just had front wheel tracking checked and that was ok.

thinking would worn bushes on the suspension and running gear maybe cause anything?

going to try and find someone to lend me a set of wheels too.

Hi there,

when you say a judder are you feeling anything through the steering wheel or is it all through the car.

If its rear wheel balancing that can lead to a general vibration that you can usually feel through the seat, but not the steering wheel. If you think it may be balancing on the rear swap your fronts to back for a day and see if anything changes.

I notice you also said you had the front tracking done, i recently had some weird handling/vibrations on my quattro and had all 4 wheels tracked. It made a huge difference to the handling of the car. I would not have believed such a fine adjustment could affect the car so much. If you do go to get the tracking done on a quattro though make sure it goes in to someone that knows what they are doing.

Originally i was getting feedback through the steering wheel but after fitting new brake discs and tyres alround it has almost gone from the wheel.its deffinately more so all through the car. Recently i was in the back seat on the motorway ( yes i let the girlfriend drive it and now she wants to drive it all the time) and i did think the judder was more apparent in the back than the front.

4 wheel tracking does sound a good idea, anybody know a good Quattro specialist in the surrey or yorkshire area?

Cheers Ron

I had a 1996 A6 2.5tdi with exactly that problem, the whole car shook over 60 but a lot at 80, all wheels balanced, just the same. It was the offside front driveshaft and fitting a CV kit cured it.

Check for clunks when turning the steering from lock to lock.

Michael

Well i've had the tracking and geometry done and it is better but it's still there so i'm thinking it must be time for some new wheels :(............

Suggest you try to borrow so some wheels before you buy (unless this is an undercover means to convince the other half that you need some new rims!). I test drove a 2.5Tdi Avant with similar problem for my brother in law and he agreed to buy on the basis that the problem was solved. After a number of weeks it was finally resolved by changing the dual-mass Flywheel. I'm in the midst of doing mine now as when I came to change the clutch it had rather a lot of movement in it! Isn't it typical that when you do a job at the weekend you manage to break a bit that will only be available from an Audi dealer and find another significant bit (the flywheel!) after everywhere has closed other than Wembley Euro car parts. Needless to say long drive to Wembley this morning!! Better go!

Got the new wheels on and What a difference! its like a new car.

was looking at it being the clutch possibly as 204000 miles on one clutch is a lot, but this weekend i towed a car trailer and my corrado on a 500 mile round trip and it didnt slip once. although i think it'll want changing in the near future.
