Non-Starter

I posted last night about a problem I have with my mk3 cabrio. It's not starting and this happened as a suddenly lost power and revs and finally stalled. Not been able to get it started since. I posted about the oil warning light being on and got a response from CRASHER. I've still not been able to have a mechanic look at the car (hopefully tomorrow) but could fuel be another possible problem. I have fuel in the tank and when I turn the ignition on I can hear the fuel pump buzzing - at the back of the car and can also hear something upfront at the engine. Could there be a blockage somewhere causing low pressure. I'm trying to weigh up the pros and cons here i.e cost of repair as I have been thinking about getting a new car so if its going to cost a lot I think I might just leave it until later on.
Any help here is greatly appreciated as I know a small bit about cars but I feel like I'm starting to get into more advanced mechanics.
