Engine is a CAGA engine 59 plate seat exeo, thought I'd post this here as over in the seat exeo section doesn't look popular.

Basically the coolant resivour there's a black mark on the top and one at the bottom not excessive id say top mark 50p size bottom mark 20p size? The coolant still looks clear and there's no oil mist floating on top when you take the cap off.

Any ideas? I'm getting it flushed tomorrow with new resivour but slightly concerned why it's there in first place :(

oil cooler leak or head gasket are the 2 things that spring to mind, with the cooler being the odds on favourite

Could it perhaps be mould? Or when they did the water pump some mucky pup filling the resivour back up? Hmm suppose know more tomorrow when it gets flushed out

possible, as anything is. or it could e the cooler just starting to leak and replacing it now will save the oil filling the coolant right up with black sludge and never being properly clean ever again. coolers do leak you see, quite a known thing to happen, but then its unusual to get any muck in the coolant if you fill it properly. is there any sign of oil on top of the water in the resevoir.

No sign of oil on the top no put my finger in there and didn't have a film of oil on top just clear none on the cap either

Just had a similar problem in my year old Mk7 Golf 2.0 TDi GT. It was eventually found to be caused by a failure of the oil cooler. Fortunately it was covered by its warranty, but it took the main dealer 5 days to sort it.

Flushed the system and put in new coolant and resivour and mine hasnt come back after week an half. Like to think mines sorted and it was all of nothing.

Luckily you didn't have to pay 40 hours @ 100.00+! ph
