Strange starting issue

After doing some work on my car golf gt tdi the battery drained, might have left ignition on or something or had door opened for too long.

Anyway put out a booster pack on and it took ages to turn over but after it did when you let go off the gas it switches straight off. Never did this before tried several times but starts after loads of cranks and then switches straight off. It is like the fuel is getting cut off. Shut off valve seems to be working fine

Sounds like a possible battery issue. i would disconnect, charge up the battery on a charger over night and see what happens.

Is the alternator charging?
