Search the forum for VCDS users map, that will give you a list of people able and willing to help for a few beer tokens.

I don't own either tool but I'm just curious why your looking for vag can which few people seem to have and not VCDS which is a lot more common?

VCDS will not enable vim, but VAG CAN Pro will. However you have to buy the vim unlock file for that model, it's not a free download. I have VCP but I'm in the north east of England. I also have not purchase that vim file.

Does not work on the latest MMI 3GP. Which is what the OP has. I'm not talking about other MMI / RNS-E versions.
stemei.de .VCDS Codierungen .Codierungsservice .Webdesign - Stefan Meier - MMI PLUS TV Freischaltung - VCDS Codierungen, Webdesign (http://www.stemei.de/pages/coding/audi-a6-4g/mmi-plus-tv-freischaltung.php) (use chrome to translate the page)
That's correct. A3 8v and facelift a6 with the mmi touch or mmi 3g+ or sometimes known as mmi 4g requires vag can or those dongles thy flash the software. Cannot be done with vcds, believe me I have tried. There's a security pin that no one has figured out yet.
how much is the vim file?

Just done a recent update on vcp and it appears the VIM download files are now free for registered users, just been able to download them.
So is it time to buy vcp and retire vcds?
just can't quite justify a £200 spend for just vim and possibly turn off start/stop

Have to say I find VCP a little thin on the label files, ross-tech has them hands down on that one. I've now got both and I'm going to keep using both, as I prefer VCDS for quick coding as you don't have to bother with the separate dongle. If you're ever near Newcastle then I help you with VIM & Start/stop.

Thanks for the offer. Will remember next time I'm in your neck of the woods.
i think at the moment vcp is the tool that does everything vcds doesn't do or don't want to do. Which is good that folk like us has another tool to go to but at a cost of £200+ which is steep for an enthusiast but probably cheap for a mechanic with a business

As a new user to VCP, I can say a definitive NO to that question. VCP is no where near as user friendly (and a lot more dangerous in the wrong hands) and is definitely used alongside VCDS.
I will not be getting rid of VCDSnow I have VCP.
