Had a front level sensor with an intermittent fault since I bought the car three years ago(2004 D3 4.2 petrol) Was never really an issue, no warning lights, just an error and level calibration took a couple of tries to set. Had to get a front tie rod cut off and replaced as it was seized and couldn't be tracked, they must have knocked the sensor as it was completely dead in VCDS, and the level orange light was on.

€200 for this from a main dealer...

Onto ebay, part number is 4E0941285F (or another letter) for the left one, 4E0941286F for the right (Part numbers are the only way on ebay.de, many more parts) I ordered the left one, got sent a right one but worked perfectly, either will do. there is also a Hella code on the body of the sensor, 4E0907503C, which seems to be common as a headlight level sensor on other models, looks the same, don't know if there is different programming. This code is the same code on both left and right, so it is the same main part.

Wheel off, wheel liner off and then it is just two screws and a nut on the arm, job done in about 20 minutes. didn't take pictures, it is easy.
€28 from ebay and 20 minutes saved me about €250...

Took the old sensor apart, non-contact sensor, no water ingress, what is strange is that the pins from the connector look like they are just friction fit, no solder. Just pushed onto the PCB. I think there must have just been an intermittent contact with the vibration wearing the pin over the years, no other visible problem.
