Has anyone any experience of piggy back tuning boxes?

There's a lot of talk about them being untraceable when removed, but a few posts online say they are traceable when removed.

Any advice, tips, opinions (relating to the traceability of them only, please) welcome...

I'm Lao looking for a tuning box, apparently dtuk sell them and they are untraceable, they don't flag up the sd1 code to let dealers know it's been tuned, so your warranty is safe

AFAIK tuning boxes work by fooling the ECU into adding extra fuel by fooling IT into thinking the engine is cold. Google "evry mod"

This very much depends on the type of tuning box. The more sophisticated digital tuning boxes will have engine-specific maps on them and connect into the crank sensor (to pickup RPM), boost pressure sensor / manifold pressure sensor to pickup boost and the fuel rail pressure sensor. Some will even connect to a throttle valve position sensor.

As the box picks up the RPM, it can be loaded with 'maps' in a similar way to the OEM ECU, where parameters change at different RPM. It's then whats quite often known as 'reverse mapping'. If the tuning box wants to increase boost by 200mb, it'll pull back to the signal going to the OEM ECU by 200mb, thus causing it to produce more boost to meet its target. The same goes for fuel pressure (etc) and whilst doing fuel pressure just in a factory ECU map won't produce anymore fuel - as the ECU would pull the injection duration to compensate.. obviously with the piggyback module its unaware of the increase, it's just had to 'work harder' to meet the specified pressure. As a result, duration remains the same as more fuel goes in to match the boost made above.

They're not perfect, and far more can be achieved with a full remap for many many reasons. Particularly on the more modern VAG Bosch EDC17 C46/54/64/74 ECU's... but they do serve a purpose. As they're in-line between sensors and the factory ECU, there will be no evidence its ever been fitted.
