Hi everyone,
I have just joined the Forum and am hoping to glean info from some of you experts if I can.
I have a 2003 A4 2.0 Tiptronic model. Just recently I started to hear a slight knocking noise from under the car. As time as passed it has got progressively worse. If I just accelerate forward a couple of metres it makes the noise, and if I reverse slightly up hill it makes a strange bumping and grinding noise. My mechanic had a look at it today and cant find anything obvious on the drive gear or suspension but think it could possibly be a transmission problem. He doesn't know anything about Audis and has convinced me to go elsewhere.
I live in NZ and need to have an idea what it could be before I take it to a kiwi "**** Turpin" expert.
Any ideas?

Cheers,
Baldyboy

i had a similar noise it only ever happened on take of for the first second or so, sounded like a rapid nock metal on metal. It turned out to be the engine mount, the top bolt had come away from the metal plate it was attached to so when setting off the engine was lifting thus causing the bolt to rattle against the plate. You could not see any sign of the brake until the bottom of the engine mount was lowered by undoing the mounting bracket from underneith, as soon as this was done you could see the damage. Open the bonnet and then drive the car forward a few feet obviously making sure it is clear, you can look through the gap that appears under the bonnet and see if the engine is moving or lifting this could indicate an engine mount.

Lots of linkages on the front suspension of these cars. Put the front up on axle stands and get under her with a tyre lever or pry bar. Give every joint a bit of leverage and look for excessive movement. The entire front suspension links on these cars need replaced fairly regularly. Check the inner and outer CV boots when you're under it.

I don't think that you should drive it any further but get it recovered to an Audi specialist before something breaks.Thats what I would do if it was my Quattro auto but I am near help

Hi, and thanks for the responses above. I am taking it in to a mechanic this week so am leaving it parked up for now.
Cheers,
