Had the 3.0 Tdi Quattro 15 months now and loved every minute of it.
I used to do a 50 mile daily drive but after a change of jobs do 4 miles per day.

I am seriously thinking of changing into an A1 diesel sport 105bhp.

I know i should consider petrol but i like the torque of a diesel and the A1 should return high 40's at least round town compared to 18 mpg currently seen in the A4.

Am i mad or making sense for a change?

yes, mad as a hatter. the dpf will be clogged solid and need replacing too quickly for your liking. if you want torque, get a big petrol engine like a v8, or better still cycle to work.

You won't get much torque from a cycle..
unless...Hello Mr dog walker, how's your day going.

No cycling as i need a knee replacement so a new car will do.
I do one return trip of 40 miles motorway each week to physio which may help the Dpf.
I have been doing 4 miles a day now for 9 months and the DPF is ok in my A4

I'd be going petrol with that mileage.

Last time in the dealers looking for something to replace the Focus TDI the salesman said that if you run mostly short journeys to go for the petrol A1. Said Audi would not cover a dpf buggered by short journeys as the car is being misused :(

Surely the cost to change isn't worth it. It might be cheaper to fix anything that crops up. Or is yours a money pit like mine was?

i also have a used mini 1.6 petrol which is used for short/commute journeys and the mpg isn't too shabby, but compared to my a5 I am not sure it has any torque, so yes - you would need a bigger engine to satisfy your requirements. The mini replaced a smart car when more seats were needed and I was once tempted by the thought of an electric smart. Cheap running and immediate torque. Don't know if you can still get them now the range has been updated?

Yes it is starting to be a money pit.
Around town 18-20 mpg, £265 road tax and £400 insurance. Tyres are £200 a pop as i put decent ones on every time and have to change all 4 every 18000 miles.
Dealer will change me into a 2012 A1 1.6 Tdi for around £500. My A4 is 2009. The A1 is free road tax and hopefully the tyres would last longer and being 16inch wheels a hell of a lot cheaper.

Still undecided though at the minute and not really in a hurry

A1 1.6 TDI 0-60mph 10.5 seconds, that's why it's free road tax ;) If your car has been problem free for 15 months then its a good 'un and worth keeping.

I have decided to keep the A4. It still makes me smile every time i drive it and for the sake of a handful of £20 notes extra each month it really is worth it.

Good decision. Once you get your knee fixed you can walk, run or cycle to work. Be a but warmer by then too!

Thinking on it, changing the car is a bit of a false economy either way. With just a 4mile drive, even a petrol car won't reach operating temperature in that time which means it will be running cold (and inefficient). I'm in the same boat in a way - used to drive my 3.0TDi 24 miles a day to work. I then moved house...4 days a week its only driving 4 miles each way! However, I do a 104 mile round trip every monday..and often visit my parents who now live a 110 mile round trip away....

I'm not sure about that. Say you weigh 80kg - that equals about 880 newtons. The crank arms on a bike are about 175mm or 0.175m therefore, assuming you put all your weight on one pedal, 880 x 0.175 = 175 newton metres or about 130 ft lbs at the cranks. Not bad actually.

Our second car is a 1.0 petrol Fiesta with 3 cylinder engine. The trick is the turbo which gives it 99bhp with decent torque. OK - nothing like a 3.0 TDi but I did see that Audi I think are introducing their own equivalent engine in the A1. For something around town that may be an option in the longer term.

Well I took the plunge and traded in the A4 for an A1.
I got the 1.4 Tfsi 185 S-Tronic model and love it. My wife has had one for almost 2 years now and it is a great car.
It also brings a smile to my face when i drive it.
I am sad to see the big A4 Avant go but the time was right to change and i got a cracking deal.
