Turbo noise

Hello all. Is it possible for the turbo to make a louder whistling noise in a particular gear and revs? I have this noise in 4th gear at 45mph and it lessens above and below this speed or in different gear. It also disappears somewhat when I take my foot of the throttle. If I depress the throttle very lightly at the speed and gear I can hear noise again. Itis noticeably louder than normal turbo noise. A3 1.6tdi 50k.

Could it be an exhaust gasket blowing instead? Check for black soot marks around all gaskets and pipes etc. Just as a check before condeming a Turbo.
