View Full Version : Help 1999 Audi A4 1.8 20v Conversion to 1.8t and twin turbo it

Hi all,

I have as above and i am going to be making this my project. I have not bought anything as yet as i dont know what the best engine is in the turbos to directly fit in.
Money and parts are not an issue as i get all german parts at cost.
I want to go for big bhp so is it possible to twin turbo a atw or any audi/vw engine that will fit straight in without all custom mounts ecu and electrics are not a problem.
I will be stripping the engine down and rebuild it with all new forge parts i really want it to ho somewhere.

This is the first audi i have owned, i am good with cars but not engine codes or what can go in what.

hello and welcome to the forum.
yes, you can drop a 1.8 turbo in there and with an ecu and clocks it will work. you can then twin turbo it, fully forge it , or even start with a BAM code which is forged anyway, and they are safe for 400 ish bhp tops. twin turbo would be fun . add some bigger brakes and it may stay on the road but you will be wheel spinning everywhere you go. Audi new this anyway, many years ago, so invented quattro, or four wheel drive. take a quattro and add as much power as you want and it will handle it, upto 1000 bhp. so, you need to get rid of your car unless its a quattro, and buy a quattro, pointless otherwise. next, you need a nicer engine than the measley 1.8t. audi thought of this as well and built a rather nice v6 with 5 valves per cylinder. they slapped a pair of k03 turbos on and called it the s4. as standard you get 265 bhp and 400 torques,which is a lot, and about 5k quids worth of mods to get a 1.8 there. spend 1k on an s4 and you get 320 bhp. slap on a pair of turbos, k04,s frankenturbo's, rs6r's from jhm, tiel 605's, and a map, intercoolers, etc, and they are safe to about 500-650 bhp. after that you need some stronger internals, but thats more than enough fo most. mine runs standard turbos and produces 326 bhp and 550 nm torque. it will out run most cars, even those costing 100k. and all that for sub 5k. choice is yours, but i know where i would start.

Am just really wanting to build my own unique car. Its something i have always wanted to do and know i have the spare time and tools.
So would the bam engine fit in fine or is it a different engine as mine is longitudinal engine

the bam is from a tt or s3 and is 225 bhp stock with a k04 turbo. yes yours is longitudinal and the s3 is transverse, but the engine is the same. the bit that bolt on are different , manifolds etc, but the block is the same. just swop everything over like mounts. you would also need the ecu to run it, along with the clocks and immobiliser unless you get the ecu de immobilised. what are the planes for the custom maniflds to run 2 turbos, and which 2 turbos. i presume you are doing one turbo feeding the other (twin turbo), rather than 2 turbos seperate both feeding into the manifold (bi turbo). you want one small turbo and one big one for twin turbo.

It would be a custom manifold and yeah it would be a small turbo feeding a big turbo but i dont know which ones are the best and would the bam engine bolt directly in on my mounting points then as there are both positioned differently. I am going to be putting some big money in to it and taking pictures from start to finish

yes, i am pretty sure the 2 blocks are the same, should be an interesting project. won't be as quick as an s4 though. i know you really want to do this twin turbo but seriously have a think about a better base car. when you are talking big bhp then traction is the limiting factor, and you soon run out of it. no good having a 400 bhp car if you can't put that onto the road. even do a 1.8 quattro, or anything quattro.

If power is what ur after, in my opinion ud best off fitting the s4 2.2 AAN 5cylinder 20valve turbo. With money or resources not an issue 1000 bhp is very easily obtained and as proven in years of successful motorsport the AAN is virtually bulletproof. A more unique A4 there wont be
