Polo 1.4tdi auxiliary belt tensioner

I'm replacing the alternator on my girlfriends 2003 polo. I've removed the alternator and tensioner but I'm a bit confused on how the tensioner works? Never come across one like this before, just wondering if I need any specific tools etc thanks

Hi There, I know this is quite an old post but I'm replying anyway. did you get the problem fixed? If not let me know and I can give you some advice as I just had to change my tensioner pulley and it was quite an adventure.
