A4 2007 Avant boot lock problem

Hi all
My boot lock seems to have gone into overdrive lately. When I open it manually it seems to repeatedly try to open rather than disengage once. I obviously don't press it for long but it sounds like a burst of fire from a machine gun.
Any ideas?

Do you get water coining out of the cover or signs of water being inside the tailgate? Often the rear wiper motor leaks and this (corrosive) fluid damages the unit.
