Hi,

It's almost MOT time I am once again having some ongiong issues with the ABS light on my Mk3 Gti16V Golf and I would like to have the facility to read fault codes from my home.

I've heard about a tool called VAG.com and I understand that it will do the job.

Looking on Ebay, it seems that there are a few types of cables available at different prices. I just wondered if any of you could clarify the following for me please:-

1./ Where is the best place to buy the cable and roughly what cost?

2./ There seems to be so manyversions of the relevany software on the net - what is the best version/where can I find it.

3./ Sharewhare vs liscensed software - would the shareware be ample to read ABS fault codes.

4./ Aside from a PC to hook the cable up to, and the above software, are there any other things that I would need to purchase?

Thanks for reading and I hope to hear from some of you.

David.

Hey Dave,

You prob should have read http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=12989 before you posted but how and ever.

1. http://cgi.ebay.ie/VAG-COM-OBD2-DIAGNOSTICS-USB-VW-AUDI-SEAT-SKODA_W0QQitemZ250161198565QQihZ015QQcategoryZ3092 1QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

2. With this type of cable, version 409.1 is compatable, which comes free with the cable (shareware version)

3. Depends on the fault, you could start off with the shareware version and if you feel you need to upgrade, then do.

4. Apart from the laptop and the cable+software+drivers there is nothing else needed, you may need to change some com settings in windows, again all is explained in http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=12989&page=3

Thanks for the reply. I will have a good read up and get one of those cables.

I dont own a laptop, but a good friend has just purchased one, therefore I will be able to use that with the cable.

Cheers,

David.

That cable will only work with Vag Com version 409.1, and that only works with windows XP of lower, not vista. Make sure your mates new laptop hasn't got vista on it!

The most common cause for the ABS light coming on is one of the sensors, theres one on each wheel, and they go faulty.
You can check the impedence at the wiring loom for the ABS ECU for each one, it should read just over 1k ohm. When they go they normally go completely open circuit resulting in the ABS light coming on and the sytem shutting down.
If you have a workshop manual it should give you the pin outs or post back and i'll dig them out.

Not all model mk3s have 4 ABS wheel sensors. ABS light can be because of a broken sensor, broken ABS relay if an early model, broken ABS pump or faulty ABS ECU. I'll put money on it being a rear sensor at fault when you read the codes with Vag Com. You can test the resistance across each sensor easily with a multimeter to find which sensor is at fault. You'll need Vag Com to clear the fault afterwards anyway

Guys I have the same dreaded problem ABS warning light comes on most of the time (95%) and it needs a MOT like yesterday - I know I should have sorted it earlier etc...

Car Mk3 Gold GTI 16 V (2.0l)

The fault code is 00280 VALVE 2 FOR DIFFERENTIAL LOCK -N127

Anyone know what this means as one of my local 'VW specialists' didn't have a clue?

Also did the original poster sort his problem out?

Cheers in advance

No, not yet mate:aargh4:

At present I am trying to get the VAG.com cable that I have purchased to work which will hopefully narrow the fault down to just one thing that needs changing. I've not given up just yet.

Thanks to all ofr the replies to my post- sorry for the delay in relying but it's been a bit manic for me lately and as such I have not logged on as much as I would have liked.

My colleagues laptop that I borrowed would not recognise my VAG.com cable either. I neet to set some time aside this weekend to try and get this sorted once and for all.

One point, quite a few years ago when I was using a serial cable and version 409 ish, I had terrible trouble getting it to communicate with the ABF engine management so that is worth bearing in mind. It would only comm with the engine off and the ignition on, not with the engine running. Other areas such as immobiliser, air bag and ABS were fine and the new USB interfaces are fine, well genuine Ross Tec ones anyway.

just a query going with this subject,i have same kind of problem as above...the bulls clem whom i bought my car off snapped the abs bulb off which i failed mot for,was told i needed 2 new rear sensors which i fitted, the abs light still stays on permanently,is this because the garage never reset the fault codes(this i know they didnt)?

The codes must be erased after new sensors are fitted. If the codes won't erase and the sensors and wiring are known to be good, (this is very common on the Golf 3 from 95 to 98) it is due to a faulty ABS ECU. Normally this shows itself as a right rear sensor fault. If this is the case, swap the wiring under the rear seat from side to side and test gain, if it still says right rear sensor, the ECU has failed.
