after all the crap ive been through with "approved"audi dealers/bodyshops ive decided that my forthcoming service will not be from an Audi dealer I just dont want to support them any longer and pay a premium for it; I know there are no updates for my car. im sure its the oil change that I have coming up in 1k. is that all that audi would change at this type, just the oil?? audi told me it would be about 240 bucks for this, really so much? how much would an indy take with audi parts where appropriate(approx )?

Likewise, ring about. Make sure they use 507 5w30 oil and genuine parts.

Indy should use genuine Audi parts - unless it's something like brake discs, pads, oil etc where "compatible" ones are used. Mine uses a tripleQ oil that meets the Audi spec, but will use genuine coolant for instance. Biggest difference is in labour cost. Audi c £110/hr, Indy c £50/hr. Plus Indy will probably charge for how long it takes, not the "book" time that Audi will charge. Synthetic oil IS expensive though - 8.5lites at £8/litre. So £70 for oil, an hours labour - £120 maybe at an Indy. Audi will likely charge £16/litre and £110 for labour.

Yep, I can definately vouch for the indy route. My local indy is a VW specialist based in wakering. I was due a major service this year on my 3.0TDi....Audi wanted to charge me £400 JUST to change the oil and oil filter! In the end I went the indy route and had:
-oil + oil filter
-pollen filter
-MOT
-Air filter
-brake fluid
-air con regas

ALL in for £400 and with original parts (I know because I supplied them!)

Crikey, really? 72k! lol. And theres me worrying about my fuel filter being over by a few K....I can tell you for free that you WILL notice better engine performance once you change the air filter. I think the 20k limit is too high - I'm going to start doing mine annually.

well, unles they just didnt tick the box to say it had been replaced. its had services at 19k, 38k, 58k, and i got the brake fluid done at 68k. My oil change is due so i might just try replacing some of teh filters my self. Is the fuel difficuilt to replace?

Can anyone comment on the quality/suitability of this filter? http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Audi_A4_3.0_2009/p/car-parts/car-service-parts/regular-service/air-filter/?502441789&1&38ada79b025466e47f0a9e4050d7bfc665ddfe9c&000008

Strictly speaking patent parts are ok and will do the job, but shop around for genuine parts online first. I say this simply because you can buy the original audi official OEM parts for literally £1-2 more than that if you find the right places. At least buying genuine you know and guarantee the quality behind it.

vag don't make filters, they buy them in and theres not many places actually making them.wix probably do though, they make a lot of filters and supply
a lot of manufacturers. its all the same filter, just with different writing on the box and filter.

Have you tried TPS yet?
They sell genuine parts direct to the public cheaper than the dealerships

I had one car on long life service from new and one on maintenance contract from new before switching to a Bosch franchise indy, they use the bronze, silver and gold menu system. I changed both cars to the silver, year one on the A3 and the A4 at £300 inc vat for full service which includes all filters and labour. Year two is bronze interim for £130 which is oil filter and oil plus inspection and labour . After using this system for the last couple of years I feel much more confident that the cars are maintained properly, although recognising that the filters are changed more regularly than main dealer recommendation. Parts are sourced from Audi dealer and overall I am saving money even with the reduced life of the filters. We also use this system for a Clio and a Peugeot 207 and have formed an excellent relationship with the garage that far exceeds the main dealer experience.
The downside is that the courtesy car, if taken, is a fiesta rather than a new level Audi I used to get from the dealer!
