Regular DPF (or is it a fan) noise

On a regular basis - with no real pattern, I have noticed a loud fan type noise from the front of the car. Now I thought that this might be the DPF but I know that it shouldn't really be noticeable when you're driving long journeys, something I do a fair bit.

However, this happens at least once a week with no discernible pattern - A long journey may or may not trigger it as may or may not a short one - Which is why I thought it might be a fan, but it's noisy and sounds more like a small diesel engine idling sometimes.

I do similar mileage and journeys as I did in my 09 plate Mk6 2.0 TDi Golf and never heard anything. Is it just me?

Yup the fans will come on when the DPF is regenerating even when driving, totally normal.
