Genuine VW Roof Bars - Estate with factory fitted rails

Hi,
1st post on here as I've reecntly come back to having a Passat so a hello to all and luck forward on getting some valued help.

& to business ......

I have just bought a 2nd-hand set of roof bars that are genuine VW and meant to fit on the rails of my 2011 estate.
Problem being, they do not seem to fit.
I'm told roof bars from older years should fit the newer cars, is this correct?
Over the years has the design changed so older bars do not fir the newer rails ?

Any part numbers on the roof rails?

Hi,

There is a VW label / sticker on each bar.
Not sure if it is a sticker number or an actual part number but there is a number that is differnt on each which are 500-831 and 500-832. Guess if it is a part number its because the bars are slightly different lengths.

I believe the set part number could be: 1J9 071 151 041

ETKA lists 1J9 071 151 as fitting the Passat before 2006.
3C9 071 151 is the part number listed for the Passat since 2006.
