Has anyone had to have the gearbox replaced on their VW Golf

My son has a Mk4 W reg 1.9sdi golf that has a gearbox problem.:zx11:

The garage reckons that it will cost around £600 just to buy a second hand one from a breakers yard That's without the labour etc.:scared:
How do we know how long the replacement will last?

Apparantly they are a common fault on the Golf thus making them hard to source. Does this seem to be a fair price??

Many Thanks:beerchug:

I have the same problem, my wifes gearbox has just gone too :zx11:

I too have been told this is an all too common problem on Golfs' and Polos', so why hasnt there been a recall?

Something to do with using soft rivets on the box as opposed to nut and bolts which are now being used on the recon ones.

Was there a recall Im not aware of possibly?

As my son is a 17 year old student, I ended up paying the bill.:zx11:
I used a local independant, WelshVW. (http://www.welshvw.co.uk/) Including VAT the gearbox (a low mileage one apparently ) was £760 quid and it cost £190 to remove the old one and fit the new one. That's £950.00:aargh4:
I could have had mine reconditioned but it would have taken a few weeks, the car was off the road for 4 days.
Kind of defeats the object of buying my son a cheap reliable runaround.:o
