100% new to this site!!

I have a 2000 passat TDI PD 115 bhp sport.

when the engine is warm and idle it starts to make a puffing noise like a train!!

i have taken the cover off the engine and found where the noise is coming from.

list to the left of the engine (next to the oil cap) there is a round metal disc like dome. just undernieth that there is a small hole (which looks like its supposed to be there.

This hole is pushing out air which is causing the noise!

as you can probably tell I dont know a great deal about cars, but I didn`t want to take it to the garage and get ripped off by someone because I didn`t know what was wrong!

I tried to get some images off the internet to explain what the part was but couldn`t find any, sorry!

help!!

Yes that looks like the same think thats in your image....

so you think just cleaning round the area and giving it a good "boot" will resolve it?

As you can see in the image the egr is disconected, preventing dirty gases going into the intake,

The best thing to do would be removing and cleaning the egr valve as well as the intake, as you cant really clean anything with the valve still on the car, you must clean and dry,

Do a search and you will learn much more :

EGR = Exhaust Gas Recirculation.

VW added EGR to TDIs to reduce the NOx emissions. It works in the following way. At partial load some or most of the Oxygen (O2) in the exhaust has been used to burn the fuel. Some of this exhaust is piped into the intake air to reduce the O2 in the next cycle. Less excess O2 generates less NOx.

The problem is that there is soot in the exhaust as well. This soot mixes with the oil mist from the CCV to form a sticky tar like substance that coats the intake manafold.

All this info is in the FAQ of tdi club.
