can this be done with VCDS, like with most american cars. This is such a useful feature when you cant locate your car in a parking lot.

Don't think this is possible. Or do you mean the little blip when you press the lock button?

You would need a new key for sure, central convenience modules are probably different on NA models as some software is different to ours.

The VW Group used to offer this.
I had a 1995 Golf which had a panic button on the key-fob.
It also would close any open windows (and the sunroof) with just one push of the 'activate alarm' function on the key-fob - without having to keep the relevant button pressed AND, if you hadn't quite closed a door before activating the alarm, gave a couple of warning beeps to tell you.
It was an excellent car that I had for ten years before getting the money to buy my first A4.

If I was in a panic the last thing that I'd think would help is the woefully inadequate sounding Audi alarm!
