OK - whats the shark fin on the roof for, sat nav or something else ?

Phone prep, ie the Bluetooth with the cradle option in the armrest.

Probably integrates nav too but that's its main purpose.

cheers Chris but a bit confused as my car has factory nav but the previous owner fitted an aftermarket bluetooth phone kit with media - why would they do that if it already has Bluetooth ?

It'll be the nav then using it. Cars with cradle only and no nav used the fin too.

Radio, GSM and GPS antenna. If you have Bluetooth phone prep (high) the car can use the bluetooth rSAP profile - effectively the car is the phone and grabs the SIM data from the phone. It therefore uses the external antenna for the phone.

It's a pity after all these years, Apple will not support rSAP.
