Just curious about peoples experience with tyre wear on the 19" wheels on my Black edition. I've done about 4500 miles and seems I don't have many more left on my fronts. They aren't at the indicators yet but not far off. Think I will rotate them to extend and assumed they wouldn't last fantasticly although the salesman told me otherwise but 4500 seems excessive and wondering if anything wrong.

How old is the car? 4,500 miles is very VERY low.

Sep 13. Not at markers but can reckon only couple of k away

Which tyres are they? Just thinking they might be a soft compound (but 4.5k is still very low)

I got 18k out of the fronts on my C7 A6 (177ps) which was on 20's, that was running Continental Sport Contact 3's.

Howdy.
Just had my second set of fronts on my Sept 2012 BE Avant.
Now at 28,000 miles. The rears still have plenty of meat on them.
Seems to be wearing evenly, I was around 14,000 when my first set went.
90% of my mileage is motorway.

4,500 is very low.
Are you a bit heavy with the right foot away from stops?

So you lot seem to be getting about 14k normally from tyres so how do I get 30k from my A6 quattro tyres?

They're on a heavier car, quattro, auto? Tyres are Michelin PS2 in 255/35/19 and I don't tottle about either.

It's certainly an interesting one, I can only put it down to more even power distribution through the wheels and the tyre compound.

I have just done all 4 corners on my Quattro A4 @ 25k, to be fair it had 3mm left on the front and 4mm on the back so I would probably of hit around 30k if I'd gone to the limit.

The Conti Sports are obviously a softer compound. But they are very grippy, no complaints in that department.

Hmmm got me worried now. They are Conti Sport Contacts 3 and here's a pic. They actually seem worse than what they looked the other day. I wouldn't say I'm heavy footed. It did seem skittish in the winter but then I seem to be about 10k down on most users. Surely this usage I'd have to spin it every time almost

Have you had them from new? Do you have any uneven wear?

Yep from day one. Spoken to friend who is an engineer for Audi and he said reckon about 10k. Still far better than 4500

Very strange, I'm not sure what to say really, there's obviously something not right, but what is a mystery. Either you've been driving round with the traction off doing burnouts :D or the compound is somehow faulty meaning they've worn far too quickly.. I wonder if it's worth considering contacting Continental about it?

Good point about contacting Continental. Going to get them rotated tomorrow before they completely go but worried they might be there already. If I do at least I can monitor and maybe contact them.

Bit of a long shot, but do you drive the same route regularly?
Is it windy or does it have loads of those high abrasion sections?

Your tyre pressures and alignment look OK from that picture.

Most my drives are 10 miles through town so not really. What do you have on your 'black' and their life like?

They are OEM Conti Sport Contacts.
I'm getting around 14,000 miles on the fronts. Currently at 28,000 miles with two sets changed on the front.
Rears will probable need changed with the next fronts. Probably around 42,000 miles.

Ok thanks. I've contacted Continental who have mentioned that I can have them returned and inspected. However I'll obviously need to get a new pair first and then have the money refunded. If I do, not sure whether to go for the same or something different. Something different be cheaper but then have different front to rear

Very strange. Do you do a lot of low-speed, heavy lock manouvering? Could be that those steering inputs are grinding away at the tread..... A tyre prefers to be rolling whilst steering...

Stuarta99

Well just spoken to my tyre guy, reckon I have 3.5mm left and about half way through, although to me they appear less

Forgot to mention, I've got OEM 19's and recently put 4 new Dunlop SP Sport Maxx's on. Done about 5k miles since and they still look new (apart from being slightly less black and shiny of course!).

My driving is predominantly motorway or fast road, not much round town driving and not much in the way of slow speed manouvering, using lots of lock (i.e. parallel parking etc.)....

The reason I mentioned this low speed stuff is that 19s have a pretty big footprint and if there's a lot of slow speed steering going on, combined with the fact it's FWD, the tyres will be getting a very hard time...

That said, you'd expect them to be harder wearing than they are turning out to be.

Yep I don't know what to do at the moment. Told that I have 3.5mm left and halfway through so theoretically 9-10k. My Audi guy has told me they have some people with Avants getting 10k so saying about right.

I have Contentinal saying they will look at them but only after replaced. I think with even 3.5 on, might get them rotated soon

10k miles for tyres still isn't great no matter what brand they are. Often a simple case of incorrect pressures can have a marked affect on tyre longevity.

Yep I thought so too

Just stumbled across this thread.
i have a 2012 Avant BE 170, bought it last year with 9K on the clock the tyres were changed by the dealer as they were shot before i bought it (had conti sport contacts on), they replaced like for like i have done just under 9K in that year and the tyres are done in. I have been doing a lot of searching and googling to decide what to buy next as i want more than 8-9K out of my tyres, it is a minefield buying tyres!
A mate is runnimg Dunlop SP Maxx GTs on his avant with 19s and gets around 14K out of his so i have bought the same to give them a try. Could be just the size of tyre but i wanted to try a different brand to see what mileage i will get.
The rears have the original contis on and are around half worn.

Interesting, sounds similar. I showed an Audi engineer of mine at the weekend and he agreed halfway through them. Said I didn't wanna kill them completely and rather rotate so at least I can change 4 in one go so going to give it a month and swap them. Do you happen to have a link to the post, would be keen to find out some more.

Bit of an update on this. I had my tyres rotated last night, on about 6600 miles now and my Audi mechanic has agreed there isn't much left on there, but hopefully I can get away with it a bit more with them on the back. I will try and contact Conti about this but does anybody have any recommendations to put on next?

I've had a full set of Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2's on for 10k now and there's still plenty of meat on them.. they also handle really well in the wet and don't tram line... plus they are relatively cheap compared to other top brands..

Just seen a set of them online for £140/each. My other thought were Toyo Proxes T1 Sport. I could get a Trazano for £54 :D

Checkout www.tyreleader.co.uk for prices..

In my experience Toyo's are really grippy in the dry and ok in the wet.. but they use a very soft compound so wear will be an issue..

If you do choose the Goodyear make sure they are asymmetric 2 and not just asymmetric... the 2 makes all the difference apparently.. :-)

Yep that's who I'm looking at right now. Once decided on tyre will have to compare with my local friendly dealer
