Recently bought a vw vento 1.9 tdi 90bhp the pre pd engine, now it runs very cool can get it up to 80degree if I'm sat in traffic for around 30mins+ but soon as I start moving again temp drops down to 70 or even lower some times.

So what could cause it? I'm thinking thermostat stuck open maybe?

We're is the thermostat on these engines?

Help welcome :)

Probably thermostat. Buy genuine or OE spec if you can.

Welcome.

Look on top of the timing belt cover or on a sticker in the boot/spare tyre well.

It's a late model Vento (1997/8?) and as you've said it's a TDI 90 it's only going to either a 1Z or an AHU.

On a 1Z (and possibly an AHU) the thermostat is on the right side of the engine - here a photo (not mine) which should help photo found on the internets (http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a85/JungleMan1978/ETKA/scan0006.jpg) it's number 12 in the image.

The housing gets brittle over time too and often breaks when trying to remove it, make sure your friendly local stockist has a spare in stock before you start work.

Good luck ;)
