Hi All, I need some advice on how to sort my my 1997 MK3 Golf GTI 2.0 16v. It recently started spluttering when it goes over exactly 2700rpm, and it also idles like S**t, it does it almost all the time. It's as if it is not getting petrol and loses power and splutters! this has been checked out and isn't the problem!! I have had the car in at the local VW specialist and they are trying to find out the problem, and as it is not a persistent fault it seems like a mater of process of elimination. Thay have changed all the spark plug leads, distributor & cap, ignition coil, coil lead, spark plugs & lambda sensor so far, and checked for fuel problems and fuel pressure!!!: I would be very grateful if any one can relate this to a problem they had in the past and help me get my beloved golf back running!!! :1zhelp: Heeeeeeeeeeellllllllllllllllllllllllllllllpppppppp pppp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hey there, i guess you've sorted out your problem by now? But if not check all your vacum hoses, as after i had a coil pack changed i experienced similar things. I thought i was gonna have to fork out for a new computer but it was just perished hoses. I pulled on one whilst the engine was running and it nearly cut the engine completely so i replaced the lot. No problems since.
hope this helps.

I got a 1998 mrk3 1.6 and im having the same problems to. Just went out in it, was fine for about half a mile, then after exiting a roundabout had no power, very lumpy, spluttering. Ticksover fine, just as soon as foot it placed on accelerator it gets lumpy.

Had the coil replaced last tues and its be running sweet as a nut since then, until tonight.

Really wouldn't recommend Golfs as a first car. Mines absolutly drained me money wise!
