Hi all, I know this has probably been covered 100 times or more.
I had the dreaded oil pressure light appear on my S3 the other day while driving it like I just stole it.
I stopped and switched off for a min, re started and it never came back on so I carried on gingerly for another C.150 miles.
As a matter of course i decided to clean the sump and oil pick up, as it happens it was all pretty clean within reason. Put it all back together and re filled with oil... the light has now come back on. Im going to do a physical pressure check against what vcds suggests to see if the sensor is goosed.
Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated as i'm starting to loose a bit of faith with it now :(

what oil have you used in it, did the light come back on when it was warmed up? if so the oil pump could be a little weak as when the oil warms up the viscosity thins out and reduces the oil pressure .

Got an even bigger problem now :(
Light came on again today after cleaning sump and pump pick up. Stopped and re started again and all was fine, no top end noise or anything so carried on. A couple miles on I got a rattle similar to that upon cold start up...sounds like the cam chain. got recovered to home and ready for a day of investigation.

I would try putting a slightly thicker grade oil in the noise might be the cam followers as they are hydraulic they use oil pressure to preset the clearance if you used 5w30 i would try 10w40

Thanks Crackpotterpig, I always use 10w 40 Semi.
That was an expensive lesson. I didn't realize how dirty that strainer was, it was so clogged it looked clean (if that makes sense)
Fitted new pump, new tensioner, seals, gaskets, oil and filter today. Touch wood all is sweet, yet to have a long drive.
My bad, i'm suitably embarrassed!

have you fitted a new oil pump then?

Yep, I thought for the cost of it and the fact the sump is off I had just aswell. It was a fraction of the cost of the Tensioner which was an eye watering £256

Dead simple, took longer to drain the oil!
