My 2003 Golf TDI headlights burn out about 1 a year, give or take. Also a fair amount of tail lights also fail. I use sylvania brand what I think are a pretty good brand.

Thats strange. In 12 years of driving ive never had a bulb blow on any car. Have you had a VCDS scan done to see if there are any high voltages registering or something similar?

Maybe ditch the brand you're using and try something that's known to be more reliable? I've had bulbs go, but it's been pretty rare...

I did mention it to a semi mechanic at work and he did say could be a voltage spike, but didn't tell me how to correct it. As for the brand of bulb, I was going for the 2 for 14.99 economy pack. Thanks guys.

suggest that VW long life bulbs are used instead of the cheaper brands. Some dealers will fit them free if you buy the bulbs from them.

Have the alternator voltage checked plus it would be better if this question was in the proper area.

I'm on number 2 alternator Crasher! Same problem, I'm pretty new at this forum, not sure exactly how to use it, sorry.

Well you either have an alternator generated voltage spike or really poor quality bulbs. What you are suffering though is a very uncommon problem. I suppose a bad earth may contribute but you have the problem off of more than one earth point.

Thanks Crasher, I understand half of your reply but on the Earth points, I'm still scratching my head. Thanks?

A poor earth increases resistance which causes an increase in current which could lead to a blown bulb BUT as I said, you have failures off of different earth points. Check and clean the earth's under the battery.
