Hello there, I am new to this site. I have a 1996 (july reg) Audi A8 4.2 quattro and need to reprogram my key fob. I have a basic key (2 infact) that just has a depress area on one side of the key, so I suppose it will just lock n unlock when activated ??. I visited my local Audi dealership (Rayleigh, Essex) but would need a second mortgage to program. Is there anyone out there who can direct me to a good and economical method. Thank you

If your 96 A8 has the earlier key type, the round button could well be for a light and not for 'keyless entry'.

Most of the early infrared (black lozenge shaped pickup on the 'B' pillars), and radio frequency remotes had at least 2 buttons.

If you have one of these under your rear seat bench, you may have the early type remote central locking.

If your key is non remote, or even if it is, the best thing you can do is replace the AUDI remote with an aftermarket flip key. They are far more economical, quicker to operate, have greater range, easy to fit, and put less stress on your central locking pump.

New style flip key:

Old style flipkey:

The remote will activate your factory alarm, and give windows/sunroof full closure.

You can swap the transponder capsule out of your old 'main' keys, and either get a new blade cut, or as i did, canibalise my old key and dremel the blade to fit the flip-key.

The cars 'central locking' module can still be coded to give the features you desire, as the after market system uses the drivers door signal just like the OEM system.
