hello chaps and chappess's :) so the gearbox in my transit died a big death the other night so while the local garage address this problem my dad has been good enough to lend me his much loved audi 80 coupe, 1996, 2.6 v6. he's had it from about a year old and to be fair its wanted for nothing, like me he does like to tinker, and he's been talking to me about a bit of a running issue he's been having with the old lass, having driven the car home last night I can now describe it a bit better, on the face of it its like a blocked fuel filter, while your just driving along at a constant speed its fine, but if you accelerate it seems to be hunting for fuel, not smooth at all, tick over is fine, its just when you want extra fuel, the fuel filter has been changed several times, and last night I removed the fuel filler cap to rule out a blocked breather on the tank, dads changed the vacuum pipes as I thought it could have been something to do with them (not having driven the car at that time).
basically need pointing In the right direction by the more experienced out there as I'm more of a ford person (cosworth.... sorry!) and it would be great if I could sort this issue out for my dad while my van gets fixed!
cheers

When the fuel filters were changed, were they full of crappy fuel or was that not investigated, it could be mucky supply.
Another one to look at is the condition of pipework from tank to engine, maybe rubber pipes deteriorating internally then sending debris through to pump.
Generally and broadly speaking the ABC V6 runs superbly when all servicing is kept on top of and if he has owned the car that long he probably has kept on top of things.
Nobody sneering at the Cosworth word either ( good enough for the Audi rs models ).
Back to the plot, you should at least make sure that your fuel and air delivery is as good as possible and go from there, there are no great horror stories to go with these engines, I have had four ABC V6coupes and saloons with no nasty issues

Good luck pal

Stuart

thanks for the reply stuart, I had a chat with dad last night and told me this has been going on for a couple of years, so I reckon I can rule out dodgy fuel, I've been into the tank and took out the pump, the tank was clean apart from what looked like tiny strands of wire, say about 3mm long, not a huge amount, but enough. anyway, I blew it out and put it bck in, no difference. the next day I got under the bonnet and undid the fuel lines to make sure the pump was pumping strongly..... seems ok, went through all the breathers and cleaned out where I thought necessary, started to take the pressure regulator apart - but then realised I needed to get to work, so I put it back together and off I went, for about the first 10 miles it ran perfectly!!! then after a slow section, back to fuel starvation. 2 other things I've noted, when it does this it wont rev past 5000rpm - again points to lack of fuel, the other is its not getting warm enough in my opinion - only 50 degrees.
on the plus side for the car, I absolutely love the way it feels to drive, you wouldn't know it had the mileage it has - a credit to the build quality of audi's. I'm really starting to want one!!!!

Aha, coolant temp sender can cause these kinds of issues, so if she isn't making temp it could be temp sender or thermostat but i would investigate the coolant temp sender first as it talks to your ecu and will **** you about something rotten

that would definatly tie in with what I've noticed - when ever its fine, its always at the start of a journey, I did wonder if it was just something that reported to the dash, or did something a little more technical, ie spoke to the ecu. nice one, so would you recommend replacing both the thermostat and the temp sender?

As I recall the ABC V6 has two temp sensors, one on each bank at the rear end top of engine, one cheap (20-30 ) and the other around 70 quid.
One is in charge of gauge and cooling fans and the other talks to the ECU ( I think )
The stat swap on the v6 units is hidden behind the cam belt apparently, so in for a penny in for a pound on that job, maybe do a test on the stat independently .
I'll have a look at some of my old threads and see if I can find out more about the sensor positions and identifying name/numbers and report back shortly

Right, just been looking back, if you go into my profile, my started threads and look for thread title ABC V6 CAT PLEASE HELP dated 30/4/11 and read through paying particular attention to posts 17 and 18 there are pdf file links to a v6 Audi engine specialist site, I think its something like 12v.org, here you will see the position of the two sensor/senders to which I refer (G62 and F76 )
Hope this is of some use to you
