View Full Version : 2010 (March) - 1.8 TFSI - Timing Chain or Belt?

Hi, As per subject can anyone let me know whether my car runs a timing chain or timing belt? Engine code is CDHA. Also, if it is a chain, are there any service requirements around it? I know the belt needs changing every 4 Years / 60K miles according to service manual. For reference, my car has done 32K miles.

I believe from doing a quick google it's a chain.

They don't have an interval just pray they don't start to rattle as this requires change.

Hi Chris,

I've done a google search too and get differing opinions. Apparently the CDHB runs on a timing chain but could not find anything specifically relating to CDHA. I've emailed Audi CS to check with them (the service book only talks about belts but this is not specific to the engine anyway). I was hoping it was a belt over chain as at least you can change the Belt under service schedule. Had a chain in my W204 Mercedes which needed the tensioners changing but was done under warrantly. Thankfully, no funny rattles yet.

Read the same article (which is where I got the CDHB reference from). Was not sure the same head meant the same engine type (novice when it comes to engine parts, or many other car parts). I'll ask Steve if Audi do not come back with anything.

I treat the timing chain same as a belt. You should get 60k miles from it. After that it's probably stretched and a bit worn. It's not that expensive to buy although there's extra labour costs. Much of a muchness IMO

Hmm, I've read a few (well 2) horror stories on here around timing chains (all on B8 1.8TFSI) jumping a few teeth... How much has it cost you to change the chain? Technically, it's supposed to last the lifetime of the engine.

Gearboxes and bearings are sealed for life, oil lasts 20,000 miles if you believe what you read. Chain, tensioner and gaskets costs about 150.00 plus 5 hours labour.
Hmm, I've read a few (well 2) horror stories on here around timing chains (all on B8 1.8TFSI) jumping a few teeth... How much has it cost you to change the chain? Technically, it's supposed to last the lifetime of the engine.

It is chain drive. We have done a few of these now on the 1.8 and 2 litre and it is a heavy job requiring a lot of specialist tools and huge opportunity for disaster if not done correctly.

OK, Thanks. Sounds like a job for Audi then, rather than Indy (only because of protection Audi Offers with warranty e.t.c., nothing against Indys in general!) when it comes to a change. Not read of any issues with 2.0 but read a few stories around chain jumping and a new engine required in the 1.8T B8s..

The benefit of an indy using genuine parts is the YOU get a full two year Audi main dealer parts and labour warranty without paying Audi labour rates which are astonishing in some places, unbelievable in others!!

The nasty with the 2 litre is potential failure of the timing adjuster which wrecks the camshaft.

The nasty with the 2 litre is potential failure of the timing adjuster which wrecks the camshaft.

Interesting to know. So Audi cover the labour too if the part fails as well as the part itself even when not fitting them from Audi (I can see Audi trying to blame the mechanic, especially when cost of damage can be in 000's). I know labour can be expensive but more peace of mind. It's more a case of finding a decent recommended Indy that can do the job considering its complexity.

Manchester. My car has only covered 32K miles and no issues yet with the chain (as far as i know) so hopefully I should not have to worry about changing the chain for a while (famous last words :D). Just the timing belt needs doing at 4 years (which my car is approaching and led me to ask the question around timing belt or chain) but this is no longer relevant to me.

Yes. I have had to call on this a few times, once they ****** me around and tried to say it was our fault and we gave them what for but ended up doing it ourself and sending the three week old faulty part back to TPS. Personally I feel the way TPS make their warranty system work is fine in concept but in reality the dealer who ends up with the problem gets bloody grumpy about it as they did not sell the parts. Why this should be I have no idea as they get paid to deal with it. In practice I have found my local VW dealer much easier to get help from regarding warranties, such as when a brand new head ****** up an engine because it had swarf in the oil galleries!) and as for my local Audi dealer, well put it this way, if was in the market for a new Audi I would not buy it from them! Nottm Sytner Audi are the rudest most arrogant pig headed self opinionated unhelpful bunch of **** suckers I have EVER had the misfortune to do business with! How they EVER sell anyone a second car as repeat business mystifies me...
