So the Continentals I put on last year are now down to less than 3mm after 20,000 miles so with winter approaching thoughts turn to new boots.

I was all set to try the Continental SP5 which looks like a good all round tyre however whilst in Costco today I noticed that they can do me a Bridgestone S001 tyre of the same spec for £35 per corner less which on a set of 4 is not an insubstantial saving

But are they any good?

Looking at the labels, they score F on economy, B on wet grip and have a noise rating of 73db. This compares to E, A and 72db on the Continentals so not a huge difference.

I have discounted the Goodyears as a few on here have seen rapid wear on the A7 and as I say, the current Continentals Sport Contact 2s have done 20k miles and have worn evenly and been a comfortable drive

Any thoughts?

Spend the extra on some Michelins.

I've just taken off my PS2's on my quattro C6 255/35/19 after 42k miles and just touching the legal limit.

You got 42k off a set of tyres?

Well the rears.

Fronts needed replacing at 33k due to bad alignment so stuck on a cheap pair on the front until now.

Another set of Michelins fresh on it earlier this week.

Continental Sport Contact 5's out on my C6 2 weeks ago. Will see how they fair

My tyre guy told me the Continentals are a softer tyre and will wear quicker but are less noisy compared to a Michelin.

Yeah, that's what I have found.

I like the smoothness, I estimate 30k out of my last set. Which is OK by me :-)

I got a good deal, and paying £170 p/c instead of £210 for the michelins is a good saving IMO.

I paid £190 a corner this time compared to £250 a corner last time, noise doesn't matter. Seems to get quieter the faster you go :p

That's pretty good. The wife got 12k out of her first set on her A5, hoping to get more on the A7.

I had Goodyear Eagle F1s on the car before the first set of Michelins and they lasted 12-14k, same driving style and same driving conditions. Wasn't overly impressed as they weren't cheap at the time!

Some interesting comments.

About 50% of my driving is motorways. I do spend a lot of time on slower roads so would never expect mega miles out of a set of tyres. I also note that 42k was on the non driven wheels and of course I am running with quattro. The good news (if you can read it that way) is that with 4 driven wheels, wear is even with front and backs at the same wear level

However

I will have a look at the PS2 price wise. I did have these on my BMW previously (335D) and can't say the wear was better or worse than the Continentals I ran on it previously.

Also I am guessing that nobody here has actually run with the Bridgestones then

My A6 is quattro and the driving in the A6 is 25/75 town/m'way.

I have just discovered that the Pilot Sport 3 (current generation) and PS2 (no longer made but plenty of stock out there) is not made to fit my car. My tyre size is 255/45 R18 and the PS range only goes up to a 40 profile so the PS2 (or PS3) is simply not an option

Indeed the only Michelin out there in the size I need seems to be the Primacy HP which is a very different tyre from the Pilot Sport

Odd because my A3 has PS3's fitted in /45 profile.

Here is the list MICHELIN Pilot Sport 3 | Tyres | MICHELIN (http://www.michelin.co.uk/tyres/michelin-pilot-sport-3#tab-tyres-sizes)

On an 18" with 255 width the highest profile is 40

They do do 45 on other size variants but not on the one I need :(

For the past year I have had a set of Goodyear Eagle F1 AS2 on my A7 (255/45 18) and can definately recommend them. They replaced the original Pirelli PZero and are noticeably quieter on all surfaces with the same or better levels of grip and feedback. Very good in the wet also.

Lots of user and magazine reviews for all makes of tyres on this website Tyres by Brand | the online tyre guide (http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/)

What sort of mileage have you got out if them so far as it's the comments from Chris about wear that's putting me off these

As for the reviews, it looks like all the main brands have each come top in at least one review

We need a review of reviews

Judging by the wear rate so far, I'd say they should be good for 25k or thereabouts
