Can anyone enlighten me how the auxiliary heater works on my A4? I believe it is only fitted to diesels because of the time they take to warm up? Does is use/burn fuel to produce the heat, or is it electrical?

It's not really an aux heater, if you turn the aircon above 24c (i think) it uses diesel to heat the heater quicker.

a proper aux heater would be for Scandinavian countries, Canada and other cold(er) places.

I think thats how it works, I remember reading it somewhere before.

Do you mean the supplimentary heater, if so that is what Chris is referring to.

The aux heater itself is an option that, if fitted you can set the timers on the mmi so that it will pre heat the car before you get in. The downside is it can flatten the battery quick (hence I dont use it). If its anything like the ones on the Range Rover it uses a bit of diesel and electric to heat it.

Its the supplementary heater, no pre-heat. That might explain why my fuel consumption hit the floor on a couple of really cold days this past week or so. How does it use the diesel to heat up quicker then - does it get it going with a glow plug affair or something?
