my 80 has one. being diesel it takes a million miles to warm up. its an ally block with 3 glow plugs in it, goes in the pipe to the heater. its meant to come on but mine wasn't working properly so i put it on a switch. now i can get warm air in the middle of winter within a few minutes instead of hours.

something like this, seems easy to fit and not too expensive either Colour Options | Engine Preheaters (http://www.enginepreheater.co.uk/colour-options.html)

i have been known to stick my little 2kw electric fan heater in the car for 20 mins prior to driving it. if you put it in place the night before and run a cable to it, you only need to plug it in the nest morn and jobs done.
