Following on from another thread about cars that are currently used by driving instructors, I thought it would be intresting to find out what we all learnt in.

If we do this based on the driving instructor's car or your own (or family/friend's) car that you predominantly learnt in.

Might also be intresting to know the price per lesson back then (excluding bulk booking deals). I'll go first. I think they're about +£20/hr now!!

1996
Nissan Sunny
1.4 Sport

Passed in 2000 at £12/hr

Driving instructor had a 1.6 Toyota Carena E on a K plate. I passed (first time) in 1997 at £10 p/h I think.

I also had the use of an H plate 2.2L Peugeot 505 GTI estate - rear wheel drive bliss. Plenty of fishtailing too ;)

I didn't know what a estate 505 GTi looked like so I googled it and this is what it came up with.
They use very similar Peugeots (i'm not sure if they are 505s) in Egypt as official taxis. Theres loads of them in Luxor and in very good condition too. Look like hearses!!;)
I think if you can learn to drive in one of them then you should automatically get the category for buses and articulated lorries on your license!

It went like poop, and for a 17 year old kid learning to drive it was awesome.

I posted some stories in a thread here - Stupid things you've done involving a motor vehicle... (http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=10791)

My mum had two 505 GTi estates and a 505 GTi saloon. The saloon was even more fun. I always wanted them to buy a 505 V6 but the only ones we could ever find were in France and being used by the French version of British Gas - they were monsters.

Anyway, back to the topic ;)

I learned in Dad's 1.9i Citreon ZX Volcane. WHAT a machine! Had 130bhp, no cat, and was lovely to learn in - mainly because it was tough to stall, so was forgiving. I passed in that same car 23/07/96, so have been driving "qualified" for 11 years now.

I still remember doing 120 down a dualie with Dad asleep in the passenger seat - with the L plates on.... :D Oh, to be young again.

My Mum's C-reg Micra (later my first car) and my instructor had an E-reg Micra. Most reliable car I've ever owned, I think it clocked up 114k before my brother wrote it off.

I too learnt in a Nissan micra 1L.... Lessons where £17 ea, then £18 ....

Passed first time and bought a Nova, which i loved... Bought for £150, sold it for £280 and all i did was put a set of corsa alloys on it (£60).

Then i had an escort mk 6/7, 1.3 Possibly the worst power to weight ratio'd vehicle on the planet, and thus was my first and last Ford.

I did 6 lessons in a Clio then my instructor got a new Yaris. Much preferred drivng the Clio, you got more feedback than the Yaris. £18 an hour just over 3 years ago. I only did 12 lessons and passed first time, helps when you've done motorbike licence first ;)

My old man drove a Talbot Horizon into the front of a Range Rover in a country lane.

Range Rover - slightly cracked paint on front bumper

Talbot Horizon - shortened by a few feet, engine visible from inside the cabin.

Started with a Peugeot 205 and then the instructor changed it for an even slower 106. Passed first time in 1993, £15 a lesson, 40-50 lessons. Wasn't actually able to afford my own car till around 2003-4.

I think it was in 1971 using a Mk 1 Ford Escort. Believe me this was luxury after going to work (at a bank) in my first suit on a Triumph Tiger Cub ! It usually took till dinnertime to dry out the suit some days ! The lessons cost about £1 (in old money). After passing (2nd time), my first car was a Morris 1100 in smoke grey, RUST and filler ! Prior to an MOT test, I remember finding a hole in the rear subframe and filled it up with a good mix of concrete, coating it in bitumen to get it through the test - and it did. I just couldn't afford a new subframe in those days. On finding the sills were going the same way, I stopped short of filling them with concrete as well. I quickly moved on to a Triumph Spitfire - brilliant :naughty:

I had the pleasure of the 205 1.1. Power power and then more power. It could barely get up my mum and dads drive. It coul go towards explaining why I o everywhere with my foot mashed into the carpet:aargh4:

I too learnt in a Nissan Sunny although I am not sure if then they weren't called Datsuns(!) And I think if I can remember that far back the lessons were £10 an hr. Can't help thinking that seems relatively more expensive than today.

Oh and Dad gave me unofficial lessons in Mum's Beetle.
