Rear Axle nut torque

Hello, I've just installed new disc/wheel bearings etc on my 1998 A4 1.9tdi Avant and I wonder if anyone can tell me the torque setting for the nut. I did them both hand tight with a socket but wonder if I should torque them. I'm wary as I had a bad experience years ago when a garage overtightehned the axle nuts.cheers

they are the taper roller bearings are they not, with the castellated washer thing and split pin ? if so, you want to set the nut with the wheel no, so you can just feel the tiniest bit of play at the wheel. we are talking a gnats whisker. better too loose than too tight.
