Car won't start. No compression on motor.

Hi there.

Wondered if any of you had some suggestions regarding my problem. The thing is as follows:

Had my 1.8 tfsi since new, five years and one month to be exact, and one month over warranty as we have five years here in Norway. 59000km on the counter and served at intervals. The car have been working flawlessly all the time, with just minor bugs taken care of under warranty.
The other week i came driving home, parked the car, went in for a shower (30min) and then off to work. The car would NOT start. Cranking over just fine, a little to fine it seems. Searched my self for the obvious. Couldn't hear the puel pump prime, so wen't for it. Got it working again, but could only measure 6V in the power supply for the pump? Well, it primes and spins, but no start. Charged the battery on the car. Get 12.3 when fully charged, so maybe time to change. Try to jump start with no success.
Ended up towing the car to a local Volkswagen mechanic as there is 100km to the nearest Audi dealer. After 10 minutes he could tell me the problem. That flop flop sound from the exhaust should ring a bell, but it didn't. Well it seems there is no compression on the motor... The VW mechanic told me it would be better to move the car to the Audi dealer for further repair.
Have VCDS and could fetch som fault codes dating to the time the car died on me. Mostly electrical due to low voltage on the battery i think.
Afraid this could empty my savings account. Any ideas for a simple solution to all this?

If you have no compression on any cylinders then the timing belt has broken/slipped

The timing belt is there. Not checked the alignment. The mechanic was talking about a valve sensor or valves stuck in open. Is that possible?
If it IS a a faulte timing belt that have caused valvedamage, should i expect Audi to contribute to the repair in spite of not in warranty as the car has only driven 37k miles?

Well, my bad then. I believed the one camshaft was belt driven, and the cams was chain connected. Does this rule out the bad CHAIN bit then? What could cause the valves to not open/close at the right time then?

The old 1.8T had a belt and a small chain on the cams. You need to post the engine code, it's on a sticker in the wheelwell and maybe on the engine

I've just checked - CDHB is chain driven.

We often think that cam belts are a weakness and chains are a bit more robust; however it is easier to inspect and replace a belt. The chain engines are just as likely to drop a tensioner, or more frequently the plastic chain guides wear through.

Please let us know how you get on with your engine.

I already told him it was a chain. It's unusual for a chain to snap usually it wears and rattles around long enough to give warning

The Audi dealer will take a look at the car november 6. Earliest they could do. Will just have to cross my fingers until then. Find i strange that there should be something seriously wrong with it. Can't imagine the chain could be broken, as the car stood still "while this happened", but who knows. Is it possible that an electrical fault or bad sensor in the cam could cause the valves not to close?
In worst case scenario where the chain has gone, and caused additional damage to the engine, resulting in an expensive fix. Can i expect Audi to take some of the cost then, despite the car not being under warranty?

Keep us posted I'm curious as to why there's no compression. I didn't think VVT operated at crank speed. When your mechanic cleared the fault codes which ones came back? You can expect nothing from Audi if it's out of warranty, The low KM's covered and a service history might get you some goodwill discount, it depends on their attitude

Well, got a call from the dealer today. Seems the chain jumped over. Maybe a faulty tensioner, they couldn't tell. The chain was not broken. Everything was damaged, cam, valves, pistons, you name it. Have to change the motor. Now awaiting response from Audi. Hope I get some of i covered. Any of you got any experience with Audi when it comes to this kind of problem? The car is 2 months over the 5 year warranty time we have here in Norway, and driven 59000km. He quoted me aprox. 14.000 punds for a new motor. Could almost buy a used car for that kind of money. Bad day, bad day...

Ok. Got feedback from Audi. They won't help out at all. The car has driven 2000 km over service interval it seems, as my last service was at 27.000. I thought 60.000 was next, but it seems 30.000km is the limit between services. Looking at a 14.000 pound+ for a rebuild/new engine. Not sure what to do..

I see that you have driven a long way since your last service, but are Audi saying that although contrary to their recommended schedule, such excess actually caused or contributed to the breakdown which you suffered? Would the service at the recommended interval have renewed the parts which failed? If not, they are just hiding behind their schedule which is irrelevant to your plight. perhaps you can engage some interest from your motoring press?
