Hi All,

The missus asked me why I went for an A4 rather than an A5 knowing I slightly prefer the look of the A5.

I replied that its the same apart from the exterior shape and interior shape its the same and I *really* wanted the 3.0TDi Quattro ahead of everything else (ie calm and boring car when carrying the baby around and a powerful beast when its just me) which the A4 was giving me for a lot less money.....

but am I wrong? is it not as simple as that?

Thanks,

The A5 is basically a A4 available in Sportback, Coupe and Cabrio models.

The wife went for the A5 sportback as it looks amazing. So much better (not to take anything away from your A4) than most of the Audi line up. We have also found the A5 is a lot rarer than the A4 which was another reason I recently bought an A7 rather than an A6.

The 3.0l TDI engine is stunning though. I dont know how I will ever get anything to match either of them if I have to downgrade in years to come!

I agree that the A5 looks amazing but I really like the shape of the B8 A4. I'm not too keen on the previous version with the rounded boot though. On a side note, what do people think of the A1 ? I have seen them and think they are terrible looking cars.

I love it. I think its a stunning little thing and if I ever live in a city I would certainly buy one.

My wife liked the A5 Cabrio, I didn't but I did like the A5 Sportback facelift :)

I see it as kind of like when you use to get the Vauxhall Cavalier and Calibra. As my mate use to say, its just a Cavalier in a shell suit! My brother in law had the A5, and apart from the obvious its the same.

I looked at the A5, (well I was trying for an S5 or S4 but misses said no!) but went for the A4, because I could get more spec for the same age and money, and it seems to be the opposite around here, there are loads of A5s, but not so many A4.

A5 Sportback a gorgeous motor, would definitely think about one next change, that or an F10 5 Series

At the time I was almost flipping a coin to choose between the two. The main differences (this was 2011, so may have changed now) that put me off the A5:

-A5 cost £10k more for essentially the same car with less spec. The A4 S-Line was literally throwing extras such as parking sensors at you for no extra cost
-A5 cost more on insurance because of being a Coupe, despite the fact both were 3.0TDi
-A5 had two seats in the back instead of 3
-A5 was only two door at the time, and the size of the doors were unchanged unlike the BMW 3 series which had larger doors for the coupe
-A4 had a bit more room in the back

These are pretty much the only reasons I went for the A4!

Some A5s were out in 2007 though, so I wonder which the designers really came up with first when they put pen to paper? Or maybe they designed the whole lot in one go and just decided if it was going to be designated a '5' or '4' when released?!

Well, the A4 Quattro was sold on Saturday, 8 months driving and my money back so that's a plus, looking highly likely that I'll be having a mid life crisis and buying a 3.2 V6 TT Quattro, so much for an A5 or a 5 series:)

I really like the look of the A5 Sportback, probably more so than the A4 Avant, but unfortunately on my lease agreement I could only get the base spec A5 Sportback, compared to the SE Technik on the A4 Avant. Also, with a dog it made more sense to have the estate. Perhaps next time around I'll go for the A5 Sportback though...
