Hi all

Just joined, first post, looking for some help....

Bought a 98 A4 TDi 110 Avant yesterday and was fiddling around last night and I noticed that the back seat doesn't latch in place. Further examination leads me to believe that my seats have been replaced at some point with seats from another model, possible newer.

The latch on the body pillar is

Whereas the back of the seat is:

the latch on the car is vertically aligned and on the seat it is horizontal. The yellow bit in the photo is where the back of the seat has been cut to allow the loop on the car to go into the seat.

So any ideas anyone?

Is it possible to change the loop on the car so that it is horizontal?

Also does the 1998 model have a central three point belt or just a lap belt as mine has a shoulder strap in the middle of the seat but its not in use as there is only lap belt attached to the car.

Many thanks

Stuart

OK

Did some more digging and suspect I may have the seats from a facelift B5 fitted to my car by one of the previous owners.

If anyone has a 99 onwards B5 could they perhaps photograph and measure the post (length and diameter) that the seats latch onto so that I can see if I can "create" one on my car to properly fix the seat back to.

Many thanks in advance.

I just checked you have the correct latch it's the same as the saloon, seats are from a different car? Passat? 5.5?

Well well well, I have a pre-facelift Avant and this is mine...:

It's a pin rather than a hook!

Who knows when they changed?

I think there was a bit of change from '98 to '99 (a change to "pre-facelift). AND THEN, I think in '00 or '01 came the facelift (Phase II) B5... I think.

Veeery confusing!

So the choice is:

a) change the clip from hook to pin. This means you need to check behind the carpet and see if you can take the hook off and place the pin (you'll need to check if there is some sort of a socket to place the pin)

or

b) Get a seat that fits the hook. Perhaps from the B5 Avant predecessor 80??

I'd be interested if anyone has a good solution to this! How very weird!

oh, hello. Looks like someone's been where you are: Avant Rear Seat (http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?89749-Avant-Rear-Seat)

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the feedback so far, I have done some more digging and it does seem there was a change from the vertical loop to the horizontal pin but fixing the date of that change is difficult. (Also as mine is not a UK car it complicates matters). One thing I have noticed is that it may coincide with the change from a centre lap belt to a centre three point belt as mine has just the lap belt although the replacement seat has the fittings for a three point belt.

I'll pull the carpet back at the weekend and see if there is a mounting point for the pin in the bodywork, if there is I think a suitably sized bolt may suffice.

Cheers

Stuart

Sorry if this is deemed to be resurrecting an old thread but the comments do not warrant starting a new thread....

There was a change of seat locking mechanism in JANUARY 1998, PRIOR to the facelift changes, later that year.

From January 1998, the Avant A4 had the fittings as in Defevers post number 4.

Prior to Jan 98, they were of a different fitting.
