Overheating? - Maybe

I wandered if you you help me with a problem that has renently arisen with my Audi 80 2.0 16 valve sport? I am not sure whether or not it is a overheating problem or not but what is happeneing is that the car starts no problem and drives no problem, but after driving for a while or parking up, leaving it and coming back later then driving it again it starts to jump around like a kangaroo and loses the will to live, and i have to just pull over (if i can) and leave it for a while then it works agian and continues to drive normally (as long as i dont drive for to long). This seems to be happening every time i drive it without giving it a rest. Any hints or suggestions would be appriciated.
Also my temperature gauge only works every now and then.
