Guys.
I'm in Derbyshire and need some assistance..... somehow.
I jump started the car to take forits MOT today.
now.....
forgetting the clunk from the back end while going there.....
the rear spring broke en route!!! damn... but....
the air bag light came on when I started it this morning and the brake warning light came on too.
the car has had..
new disks and pads all round.
new rear calipers
full brake fluid change.

all connections for airbags have been disconnected and cleaned (even though they looked like new)
but... VAG com is showing intermittent faults on ALL drivers side air bags.
all I am tempted to do for now is disconnectthe battery and cross my fingers.

oh... vag com attempts to clear the errors but they come back within seconds.
any one?
so...
I have an Audi A4 TDI avant with 178000 miles, a new turbo, a rebuilt bottom end. new brakes all round and when ithas passed the MOT... it will be goingfor sale..
offers pre MOT considered..
offers post MOT considered too..
cheers chaps.

VAG-COM Codes - and yes... it's fully registered, but I have had it for years!!!

The ABS problem is obvious and easy, the air bag ECU has objected to what you did and is now FUBAR. I keep telling people not to jump start cars.

I agree with your response to "Jump Starting" especially for those people that just "clip on the leads and expect miracles".
However; I'm NOT a clip the leads on type of guy....The process... which I'm certain others will agree is, and was in this case.
keys out of the ignition. - connect the good old leads in the proper order and start the "donor" car.
leave it running for a few minutes. (5 or 10) before trying to start the dead car.
so... after 5 mins... I actually took the leads off and the car started on it's own.... basically, I use the donor car to charge the battery
all that said.... the bl00dy light is still on after a jump start.... well... dead battery and a quick charge...

After disconnecting the battery and putting on charge while I work on the car....
I separated ALL AIRBAG connections and cleaned them today, fastened them tight with tie wraps and left the battery leads off..

something tells me (because the Alternator is charging at 14.8v that the battery is probably dead and causing many of these problems... again.. - I think I will borrow a battery of my 11plate A4 and see if there is a different result.
unless you guys think I'm flogging a dead horse and should Swap the AirBag ECM?????
answers on a stamp :D
And I do really appreciate any assistance given.

It isnt the seat wiring.. ive even linked out the wiring using the 4.7ohm 1w resistor test..
But....
The floor is wet under the carpet on the drivers side... will investigate further tomorrow!

Guys...
I have just found three different modules.
Mine is a 8D0959655J
Im finding three ending in L B or C.
Do the part numbers HAVE t be completely identical including the last letter???

just fitted an identical WORKING AirBag ECU and Steering wheel components.... (i have a good friend who was scappping his A4 TDI due to a rear end shunt. - his car still drives and has no lights on it)

The light is still on when the items are fitted in my car.....even the error codes are the same when I use VAG-COM.. I have done the connection replacements on all joints on the air bag system by removing and soldering / heat shrinking - linked out the seat wiring with a 4.7Ohm resistor.

With the Brake Pad Warning light coming on, I thought it could potentially be an instrument cluster failure...
so... I put my bits back on and took the cluster out of the car..... wondering if i could extinguish the airbag light by "removing the airbag warning light wires, I cleanly removed the White / Yellow wire from the Green plug, location 10 (Dec 2000 B5) - and the light was still on.... I noticed that the same colour wire was on the Blue plug, so again I cleanly removed the wire from there too... and the light still remains...
because I want the airbags to work... and not do a "bodge Job", i connected the wires back onto the cluster plugs and rebuilt the car.

My mate has a buyer for the instrument cluster, so I dont want to mess around with that in case my car's little problem breaks it.

But.... why the Amber Brake Pad Warning light too? brand new pads and disks all round.... - i guess I will strip the front wheels off and do the "link out the warning light loom" with a paperclip later today!

Just linked out the pad warning light wire s on both side and still no joy..
Voltage meter showing 14.4v still.
Hmmmm.

Common faulty earth point locations anyone care to add a location???

Failure of the nearside ABS/pad harness is common. Bridge the connections out at the inner wing terminal blocks behind the grommet.

At the black connector location you will find a brown/green wire, if you earth this the light should go out. If not, remove the left lower A pillar kick panel and locate the 17 pin green connector, at position 3 the brown/green goes from there to the dash.

Black connector? I'm slightly lost.. do you mean the connector behind the wheel just throughout the grommet? Also.. in the LH a pillar, the nly green connector has two wires. Which is situated kn the second row down.

Ah... so I put my multimeter I to AMP mode and stuck one cable into the brown side of the plug and held the other onto a good earth point... the brake disk.. and hey bingo bango the clocks now say OK...

So has tha done a reset or does that mean I need to replace the wiring from the connector to the pad and abs??

Thanks Crasher... bad earth.... the wire had broken from the main earth junction.
Now I need to find out what this is all about

I think I have found out whats causing all of thes problems.
The scuttle panel under the windscreen was full of water (parked up for 15months). Anyway.. the water level got so high it started to seep into the car. Hence the floor beng wet under the carpets. I found the battery gas expulsion pipe (you know...the clear tube which is fitted to a decent battery gas escape fitting and then pushed down through the hody work into the engine bay... well.. that one anyway) it wasnt being used so I pulled it out and about two gallons of water ran out ontk the griund via the engine bay.
The carpets are wet because the floor pans are completely saturated.
Looks like carpets out and a drying session this week... oh.. the drivers seat igniter is underwater... and I'm pretty damn sure I cant link it out without getting an airbag to deploy.....
I yope drying it out and electrical contact cleaner followed by a good dose of WD40 sorts it out! Its bl00dy annoying!!

Get the battery out and clean the drains under the tray and under the servo.

Ok.. so an update.

I took the battery out, steam cleaned the scuttle panel compartment and ensured the drains were cleaned out.
removed the wet and soggy pollen filter and replaced it.
removed the seats and centre console
removed glove box and under steering panel.
removed plastic trims which were on top of the carpets.
removed the carpets.
I could see that both Air Bag igniters were not damp, but almost underwater.
now I could see the electrical connections under the dash areas.

I drained the water out of the car and kept mopping it out with towels, until I couldnt get out any more water.
then...... for a period of 10days, I had the caravan dehumidifier running in the car with all windows and water ingress points sealed up.
I removed 9 pints of water from the car until there was very little left to be drawn out.
I used WD40 Contact Cleaner on ALL electrical connections and ensure they were clean before WD40-ing them prior to connecting them back up.
I did this with every connection I could see in the car (airbag circuit, fuseboard etc)
I temporarily refitted the seats and soldered the seat switches back to the AirBag circuit - using heat shrink as the insuration / protection.
Finally, I connected the battery (which has been on trickle charge all of this time)
Flaming hell..... i turned the ignition key to on and the light was there - gulping, I didn't notice if it was before I started the engine or before, but the light had gone out.

so..
the moral to the story is.
As Crasher has stated, remove the battery and clean the drain out... I would add /2remove it every year in spring-time and clear the drain".
Also... If i had not been too lazy to replace the pollen filter, I would have noticed it was wet..

yes... the scuttle panel fills up with water, and the water then leak into the car via the pollen filter - which pours water onto several multi-plug connectors, earth points and components.

oh well.. lessons learned... and now..... the car has a new owner - who loves it more than I did... maybe because I spent a small fortune on getting it back on the road - which is much less than he paid for it!

Thanks Crasher.... you saved me from pulling "what is left of" my hair out and scrapping the car!
All's well that ends well!
