my cordoba won't go into 1st gear

hey anyone know what would cause my cordoba not to go into 1st gear i was told it could be the gearbox by one garage and by another i was told it could be the LINKAGE

If the rest of the gears work then the clutch is discarded. What´s the mileage of the car? Do you shift gears rudely? If the mileage is high and you´re a fast, harsh shifter the rod or linkage that works first gear could be deformed or loose. Probably the exterior shifter mechanism of the transmission needs adjustment and lubrication. I fixed a friend's jetta that way, except that he had this same problem with the reverse gear.
