Hi everyone.
I'm new to the Vag community.
First poster on here.
Bit of a long post bit here we go.
I'm an avid Jap Fan.
Only ever had Japanese cars.

Last week I decided I needed a sensible economical car, got on the local news website. Found an "s-reg" 1999 Audi A4 1.9 tdi for a few quid under a grand.
Rung up, and 2 hours later I was happily driving home in my new sensible motor. She was lovely. Drove well, no issues or knocks, 130k miles on it. 2 owner car, chap had it for 9 years and serviced well and regularly. He just got a brand new a4 so didn't need this one.

My fuel gauge was on quarter of a tank and the display showing 185 miles to go till I needed fuel. 10 miles later the car came to a stop. I pulled over and when I turned the key off and on again to see what was going on the gauge wasn't moving, the display saying 0miles...
I rang the missus and after 10 minutes of laughing at me she brought me a can of diesel. I smelled it before putting it in, it was diesel. I put it in, got the missus turning it over, while I loosened injectors and bled them.
She fired straight up but a very harsh diesel knock associated with it.
Very loud, almost like there was no oil in it, turned it off straight away, checked oil, looked underneath no leaks, all looked fine.
So I fired it up, and drove off. I was a mile from home, the car had no power.
1st, 2nd and 3rd gear is the best I could do, no power in 4th and 5th...
It's almost like the turbo didn't come on at all.
So after endless google searches I had no idea what was going on.
My brother told me to try turning the key to off and on again while driving it. I tried it and whooooo, she came alive, boosted all the way to 3k rpm and died again. So repeat the process, and after 3 days of doing it I came to the conclusion it randomly loses power, sometimes I've got power for 2 sec. sometimes she pulls like a train all the way home, 15 miles....
The harsh knock is still there wether it's got power or not.
I took it to 5garages and a mobile mechanic who is an Audi Specialist came out to see it.
They plugged their computers in it, and all had the same Code.

"---00550 - Start of Injection Regulation

00550 - Start of Injection Regulation: Control Difference

Possible Symptoms
Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) ON
Loss of Power
Starting Problems
Transmission in Emergency Mode

Possible Causes
Fuel Tank incorrectly filled with Petrol or Biodiesel
Air/Water in Fuel System
Injection Timing incorrect
Electrical Fuel Pump faulty

Possible Solutions
Check Fuel Tank for Petrol and Biodiesel
Drain Tank and Fuel System
Check Fuel System for Air/Water
Check Fuel Supply and Return Lines for Blockage and Leaks
Check Electrical Fuel Pump
Check/Correct Injection Timing
Perform Basic Setting / Use TDI-Graph---"

The mechanics tried everything in the solutions list.
Everyone looked at it puzzled, timings been checked, they bled the injectors time and time and time again.
Got a brand new 3rd injector fitted ( the one with the sensor ).
New diesel filter.
Fuel system blown out and cleaned.
Fuel in it checked ( been filled up with esso diesel )

Someone please help me figure this out.
I ran out of ideas, mechanics hate me.
Please

I just wanted a sensible car.

An excellent choice of car my friend. Firstly Welcome :) You need a scan with VCDS or VAS-PC if you want to go main dealer. I suspect your loss of power is turbo related this can be a cheap and easy fix again a scan with live data will tell you. If you could get a VCDS scan (many site members with VCDS will scan your car for the same price a main dealer charges to use his toilet) post the results on here and a pointy head will analyse and suggest treatment

Thank you Doctle,
In that case is there anyone between Shrewsbury and Hereford who's got the equipment and time to do a scan?
I'd really appreciate any help.
Any opinions on this matter would be highly appreciated.

Guys, it's been a very long day, been spannering and experimenting.
I unplugged the return and fuel feed pipes. Blew them both and my mate could hear bubbles in the tank. So the pipes were clear. Just as I was putting the feed pipe back on I noticed the liquid coming out the pipe on top of the diesel pump didn't look like diesel.
So instead of messing around I took a clear bottle and dunked it in the tank via the big hole where the sender unit is. Pulled it out and put it next to a bottle of clear diesel. There was a clear difference ( see picture below )....
I still don't know what the stuff is in it. But it's not clean diesel.
I went back to the garage where the missus got my gallon of diesel from when I ran out and got the guys at the garage to print out the receipt... To my surprise she bought me diesel according to receipt. I'm sorry I doubted her in the first place. So now, I'm in the boot with a cup and a bucket pulling out the dirty liquid out the tank.
Anybody wanna guess what it is cause I'm clueless?
Look at the picture. 21866
The bottle on the right is fresh diesel + water. The middle bottle is out the tank and the left one is fresh diesel.
By the way the car stopped knocking when it ran on diesel out of a gallon can.
Hope there is no damage to anything....

You'll have to drain and flush the fuel system and change the fuel filter. If she ran ok on another fuel source it's a cheap fix

Quick update.
Fuel has been replaced, even more head scratching by me and surrounding mechanics, everyone's stumped as there's absolutely no change...
In a desperate attempt after a few lagers I went eBay shipping last night and today I had a notification that my items have been dispatched, after a bit more hear scratching I realised I bought a VagCom obd2 cable last night... No idea if it's going to work but well find out tomorrow I guess...
It's meant to come with a cd ( driver + shareware version of VCDS LITE )
So, I've no idea what I bought... I'll have to experiment with it tomorrow, begat should I look for?

Car still knockes like a steam train....
Still can't outrun a 49cc moped in it....

Help? Please? Did I buy a load of useless tat?

This is what I bought : VAG KKL USB/COM OBD 2 Diagnostic Cable for AUDI / VW / Skoda / Seat OBDII EOBD | eBay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VAG-KKL-USB-COM-OBD-2-Diagnostic-Cable-for-AUDI-VW-Skoda-Seat-OBDII-EOBD-/290917655992?pt=UK_Diagnostic_Tools_Equipment&hash=item43bc0b25b8)

There has to be some problem with the fuel lines maybe a damaged line thats almost closed or drawing air. If she ran ok with another fuel source thats your problem. Cable will work in a limited way but read this first Ross-Tech: VCDS: Afterrmarket Radio Problem (http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/aftermarket-radio.html)

If i may add to the VCDS details, I've been playing with it all afternoon.

I started looking at the Measuring blocks, with a website opened on the side and cross referencing...

So, here it is

Group Block 1 Block 2 Block 3 Block 4
1 ok ok ok ok
2 ok ok ok ok
3 ok ok ok ok

4 861 1-3 BTDC 27.1BTDC!!!! 2.8%

ideal numbers: 870-950 2ATDC-3BTDC 2ATDC-3BTCD 40-70%

After clearing all the faults, this one reappears instantly

00550 - Start of Injection Regulation
17-10 - Control Difference Intermitent

Really hope this is enough details for someone to tell me what this means .....

Thank you

Maybe I read this wrong , but if the actual timing at idle is 27,1 BTDC it looks like your cambelt has jumped. The Injectionpump is very hard to rotate if its fed with rusty water so something have to give in.
Time to change cambelt ?

Danyel

You read that perfect. At idle its 27.something....

Cam belt properly done should sort it you reckon?

The oks are all parameters within the ideal, only written out anomalies if that makes sense....

Even if your mechanic checked the belt and timing , do it again. Turn the engine to TDC. ( mark on the flywheel) and see if the hole in the IP.gear line up with the hole behind.

If the timing is that far out you could have valve/piston damage and that's a head off job
