hi i am thinking of buying a Audi A4 2.0 TDi 143 SE 2008 (58) with mileage between 70000-80000 on it. i am a bit scared of spending money after reading the problems people have with them. do they really have so many problems with them and is it worth spending £9000 on one

The B8 is significantly more reliable than the B7 it replaced, it doesn't have the same problem with injectors or oil pump balance shafts.

They're a nice car to drive and both B8 loan cars I've driven have been very nice, especially the Avant.

Don't forget that this forum and many others only represent a very small number of owners and most people will always look to a forum with either buying questions or issues they are having. Not many just post to say 'I have A4 with 80k on and I have not had any issues'

70-80k isn't high mileage for these cars, they can go much much higher. Just make sure that the Cam belt has been done and it has a full service history (Doesn't necessarily matter if this isn't all Audi). For additional piece of mind, try and negotiate an AA warranty (or equivalent) with the dealer you buy from. Most will give you 3 months or so as standard, but getting a year shouldn't be too hard.

I have exactly the car you are looking for but with 140k on the clock. I would check to see if the clutch/dmf has being replaced and if not keep a close eye out for clutch slip or juddering when pulling away during any test drive. I had a new clutch and dmf at 85k and it seems to be a common problem with the 2.0 tdi 143 for some reason. Also see if the DPF sensor has been replaced. Mine failed outside of warranty but it is a known fault so the dealer replaced free of charge.

That's the negatives done. Positives are that it runs and feels like new. No creaks or bits falling off. Very impressed. I've had this since it had 34k on the clock and I'm looking to run it until at least 200k (just two more years for me!!). It's got a full audi service history but I got the clutch rebuild done by a top indy who charged half what the dealer was going to charge!
