Right I fancies a Phaeton. I'm probably looking at 3.0 diesel. For the money I'm spending I'm looking at around an 07 car but I understand they did an update that year. What were the changes? are they easy to spot? Was any done to improve reliability? I also understand a mod was done to the 3.0lt engine. Something to do with injectors failing to shut and causing smoke and timing chain rattle from cold start. What year did these improvements happen?

Sorry for all the questions just don't want to get lumped with any big bills just after buying. I'll be looking at cars with 60-80k miles on. Apart from the normal wear and tear items is there any other issues at that mileage?

Cheers all

The engine is mostly shared with Audis, and they fixed most things by 2007 so you should be fine. Older cars had problems with chain rattles.

If you're buying from a dealer you will have a minimum 3 month unlimited mileage warranty so should anything go wrong you'll be covered.

Have a look at the old brochure here - http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/used/old-brochure

Remember they're not a easy car to run, you'll struggle to see 40mpg on a long run and just because the car is cheap(er) than it was new, you'll still have the running costs of a £50k+ car.
