I rently purchased a 1997 1.6se and occasionally when dipping the clutch at junctions and stopping the engine drops to a very low idle 400-500rpm, hunts for a bit and then returns to a normal idle speed.
Is it likely to be something that needs cleaning? I also noticed after buying the car that they have fitted a k&n style filter and a such have butchered the air box in the process ( cut a hole in the lid so the conical filter fits in), could this be linked to the problem?

Would be grateful for any advice:confused:

I've had that problem a couple of times with mine - OK on cold but once warm it could stall on stopping for traffice lights etc. Seems to occur after its been serviced at the VW dealers, and after a few weeks the problem goes away. Could well be related to the filter although mine wasn't changed the last time it occurred.

Hi,i have a 1997 'R' Reg VW Passat 1.6 S and i have the same problem.my car is totally standard and was told it was an air leak, but checked everything inside and out twice over and found no leaks.I was then told it was a fault with the idle control valve...to which i could find no reference to in my haynes manual!!.Apparently its a fault that may not register on the cars ECU as a fault code which makes matters worse!.

Is there anyone who can offer any help and advice on this as it spoils an otherwise pleasent car to drive, and makes driving the car very frustrating and annoying.I really dont want to take my car to a dealer or specialist and spend los of money going round in circles,if its simply a matter of replacing a part i can do it myself, but its the finding out which part it is to replace.just needs someone with exerience of this problem to shine some light on things.
